LGBT Identity Among Young People Has Tripled Since 2008
The instantly recognizeable ‘LGBT flag’ seem to be everywhere nowadays. It’s printed on National Trust badges; it’s flown outside U.S. embassies; and it’s painted on the side of police cars. Mega-corporations emblazon their logos with the flag every June, which comprises ‘LGBT pride month’ (though their Middle East divisions are notably exempt from this trend).
Has the rainbow-isation of everything been accompanied by an increase in LGBT identity – in people identifying as a sexual minority? It has, according to a comprehensive new study by political scientist Eric Kaufmann. Focussing on the U.S. (where there’s an abundance of relevant data) he finds that society is becoming less ‘straight’.
Unsurprisingly, the rise in LGBT identity is concentrated among young people. Depending on which dataset you look at, between 16 and 25% of under 30s now identify as something other than ‘heterosexual’. The true figure is likely toward the lower end of these estimates, says Kaufmann. Even so, this would still mean that one in every six young Americans has an LGBT identity.
Okay, so a lot of people say they’re not straight. But is this reflected in their actual behaviour? In part, yes. But Kaufmann finds that rising LGBT behaviour accounts for less than half the rise in LGBT identity. As the chart below indicates, non-heterosexual identity is up by 11 percentage points since 2008, whereas non-heterosexual behaviour (reporting at least one same-sex partner in the past year) is only up by 4 percentage points.

What explains the disparity between identity and behaviour? There’s now a large segment of women who identify as ‘bisexual’ despite having only male sex partners. In 2018–21, 55% of ‘bisexual’ women under 30 had only male sex partners, compared to just 13% in 2008–10. A similar trend was evident among ‘bisexual’ men, though it was much less pronounced.
Note: part of the rise in non-heterosexual behaviour may reflect higher rates of reporting now there’s less stigma. And while this would imply that figures for earlier years are underestimates, it couldn’t explain the growing gap between identity and behaviour.
Turning to politics, Kaufmann finds that LGBT identity is heavily concentrated among those with ‘very liberal’ views. As the chart below indicates, between 34 and 49% of under 30s with such views – compared to less than 15% among conservatives.

Of course, one would expect non-heterosexuals to gravitate away from conservatism, with its emphasis on the traditional family. But notice that the percentages for moderates are only slightly higher than for conservatives. This suggests the pattern can’t simply be explained by non-heterosexuals embracing ideologies that are more tolerant of their lifestyles.
Zooming-in on college students, Kaufmann finds dramatic differences by subject area. Those studying the social sciences or humanities are about 10 percentage points more likely to identify as LGBT than those studying the hard sciences. And among those taking “highly political majors” like gender and race studies, the LGBT share reaches 50%!
All this suggests the LGBT phenomenon represents a kind of fashion on the political left. It’s now possible to raise one’s status (either as a ‘victim’ or ‘non-conformist’) by claiming to be ‘LGBT’ – even if one’s behaviour is strictly heterosexual. Of course, fashions have a habit of changing, and it remains to be seen how long this one will last.

It’s not just a fashion, it is, imo, being actively pushed. I was in Spain in June, in a small suburb of Barcelona. Having a coffee in a park one morning, I noticed a local primary school covered in rainbow banners with the words that this area was against transphobia and worshipped LBGT+whatever other letters of the alphabet they’ve tacked on recently. I remember being a little mystified. I lived in Barcelona for several years from 2000 on and go back several times a year (when not prevented by coronazis). I cannot speak for all of Spain, but during that entire period Barcelona and environs has always been extremely relaxed and accepting of the LBGT community, very similar to NL, so quite why this well-intended display of support was necessary was beyond me. Particularly in a primary school. There is a difference between being honest with children when they ask questions and exposing them at all turns with something that by and large should not figure greatly in their lives at that age. Together with the current trans craze I believe the ‘fluid gender/sexuality’ trend, or however one wishes to call it, is being intentionally and consciously pushed. A substack… Read more »
Great post. I agree it’s being pushed, but am slightly puzzled as to why and why this much especially from some quarters. It’s probably just another convenient bandwagon like covid, climate hysteria, wokeism in general, that people jump on for various reasons. A lot of it is virtue signalling, which has always been a thing, but previously people did it in other ways, like going to church.
I am increasingly of he mind that there are a certain number of people who just crave telling others what to do, what to think, how to behave. And I think they latch on to whatever enables them to do that.
LGBT ideology confers status these days so these people run to the front of the pack and shout the loudest.
And then there are rhe sheep that follow then..
In my day, things could be boiled down to just two ways of thinking about people’s politic:
1. Those who think
2. Those who follow rules
Who writes the rules, ah, now there’s a question!
Spot on
If it’s part of the WEF agenda pushing the alphabet people cult, then the greater the number who will get pushed into a reproductive dead end, then the better from the perspective of reducing the population.
‘What explains the disparity between identity and behaviour?’
Fad, fashion, people with no minds of their own. It will continue until something else equally, vacuous and idiotic comes along to distract the wee bairns.
Indeed though this fashion is somewhat more toxic than wearing flares or whatever as it’s part of a bigger picture where anyone expressing negative views or failing to do proper homage to the religion of woke gets sacked, vilified, cancelled etc.
Especially for white people studying and eventually, even planning to work in certain fields, eg, gender studies, it’s certainly favorable to collect as many oppressed group identities as they can muster. This just communicates that relatively unimportant people adapt to strange hobby horses of those who hold power of them by paying lip services to these. Not exactly a new phenomenon.
In an ideal universe, people would see no need to jump through such hoops, but this would be a different conversation.
Thanks for a somewhat more readable summary of the Kaufmann text.
Yet shorter version: The majority of the increase in LGBXYZ identities is composed of female students of humanities and bullshit sociology who are fond of contemporary US radical left policies and self-identify as trans-bisexual, ie, unary bisexuals who only ever have heterosexual relationships.
It’s brainwashing of kids by perverts masquerading as teachers. The cynical targeting of teenage girls by transgender activists is particularly disturbing! It’s cultural contamination. More than anything, it constitutes another overt attack on the family, which will undermine cohesion in Western society, which is already on the ropes. Organisations such as the WEF want us to be more like China, the EU ambassador to China wants China to rule the world. You have to destroy Western civilisation to make that happen.
Like white woman masquerading as black, Rachel Dolezal, this is members of a majority taking on the identity of a minority perceived as ‘fashionable’. In Dolezal’s case it involved none of the actual historical experience of racism towards African Americans and in this case it doesn’t involve any of the ‘icky’ business of actually sleeping with someone of the same sex. It’s so insulting to genuine gay and lesbian people. These tourists have even appropriated the term ‘queer’ a slur that I remember most clearly being hurled at me by the three homophobic men who tried to beat and kick me to death in the 90s. I can’t adequately express how angry this makes me.

GMP are not now using their rainbow coloured car but using normal liveried police cars during such ‘rainbow’ entitled events.
Thank goodness, sanity making a comeback! The police should be impartial and I for one don’t expect to see them in rainbow epaulettes and / or rainbow flashed cars.
Sigh, as expected, the ‘rainbow’ community are complaining they won’t feel ‘inclusive’ anymore without the rainbow police car…

I once made one (for Facebook) with hammer and sickle, a crescent and BLACK FRIDAY!
written on it. That should cover about everything. Truly the flag of the English territory of the Democrat’s American republic.
Hi RW
was that superimposed over the rainbow ( chuckling) I wonder what else they will add. A unicorn?
YES Black Friday an awful day!! Buy and sell your soul day, all in one stressful day. Bargain ? !
This article says that it is a ‘fashion’ ? No. More accurately it is a politically motivated ideology hence they are adding all the other visuals like the black line and the gender Escher circle.
The gender ideology has taken over pride.
Breaking up our western values of family with a constructed something else.
Ban LBGT whatevers having IVF treatment on the NHS and just watch the popularity of the alternative lifestyles decline precipitately
