A new inquiry by the charity Sense about Science has concluded that the Government’s top-down attitude to the pandemic and simplistic and exaggerated messaging hindered the public’s ability to respond and caused unnecessary harm. Amy Jones at UnHerd has more.
The inquiry used testimony from expert witnesses combined with new population surveys to analyse the impact of the Government’s approach and communications during the pandemic. It found that, rather than empowering individuals to make sensible decisions based on risk and knowledge about the pandemic, the government instead chose to focus on simplistic slogans, such as ‘hands, face, space’ and stringent universal rules.
By focusing on such paternalistic messaging, the government at times misled the public, for example leading people to believe that their risk of infection was higher than it actually was (the inquiry notes this is particularly true of children and the young.) In an attempt to increase compliance with the rules – even after evidence showed a huge disparity in risk for different age groups – the Government continued to imply that Covid didn’t discriminate.
This meant that groups at lower risk, such as children, were subject to stringent, harmful restrictions, the impact of which could have been reduced or avoided. It also meant that resources weren’t adequately allocated to those who were most at risk. As such, there was a failure to consider the cost of different interventions, which should be standard practice for policy decisions.
Modelling scenarios, for example, did not consider the harm of school closures, and therefore failed to consider optimal strategies for keeping children in school. The Government failed to effectively communicate the rationale behind such policy decisions, instead simply issuing blanket decrees – something which harmed people’s ability to adequately judge risks. In the first few months of the pandemic, the inquiry found that 60% of policies were set out in press releases, rather than in policy documents, and around 90% provided no clear link to the available evidence behind policy decisions.

I recently wondered as the covid pandemic led to the corruption of science. The reason I ask this question is because of two things a recent WHO report and the discovery there’s a job called industrial hygienist. The WHO recently reported that 15 million people had died due to covid,with just over 6 million actually dying from covid and the rest dying from the measures taken.In other words the measures taken killed more people than the disease, one of these measures was masks. An industrial hygienist is not only an expert in PPE but can assess the effectiveness of measures taken to reduce airborne hazards like covid. I believe one in four covid infections were caught in UK hospitals which means millions got infected there and thousands died unnecessarily. The reason for this is that the air in hospitals was full of covid which an industrial hygienist would have reduced drastically by opening windows, fitting filters and installing UV lighting. We have laws for people who work in hazardous jobs and the means to reduce risk so why should health workers and patients be exposed to covid. We’ve known for forty years that masks are ineffective so what suddenly changed?

Yes, and say something like “there is no evidence that” and leave your audience to assume you’ve looked for the evidence and haven’t found it rather than you just haven’t looked for it. It’s genius when you think about it and completely unethical too.

This is nowhere near the mark. A massive, top-down propaganda campaign, designed by the Behavioural Insights Team, operated as a society-wide experiment on ordinary people. This was a psyops.
Where is the outrage? Why are DS relaying such lightweight crap? We destroyed our economy. Predetermined. From their narrow perspective issuing orders to vaccinate the entire world against something originally called covid, detectable only via a dubious test and only treatable with a dubious vaccine which isn’t a vaccine but a gene transfer technology, is normal. As one of the “astonished and outraged”, I am still baffled by those who weren’t. I thought it was all so obvious; thought it would be laughed to scorn.
I found instant agreement from a cousin, but discovered that I could not even talk about it with my sister. A colleague I regarded as difficult shared my outrage; a colleague I regarded much more warmly did not.
By and large, there has been surprisingly little movement. One friend definitely shifted; my sister decided that my unvaxxed, unmasked dissident state didn’t turn me into a pariah as far as she was concerned. But we talk about everything except the thing that matters so enormously.
I wrote a press release laying out a plan to “protect the vulnerable” and for everyone else to “carry on carrying on”.I showed it to relatives who were in a position to at least make waves … they couldn’t care less …. they refused to think about it. We didn’t speak much in the last two years.
Almost the opposite of what gey say – like Orwell Newspeak – “protect the vulnerable” = expose them to Covid in Care Homes, emotionally deprive them of their family and human contact, fill them with Medazolam.

I am not baffled AE. What would have certainly confused me would have been a lot of people agreeing with my position. I am by nature an outsider so by rejecting my views those around me actually confirmed them.

I understand people complying half-heartedly with things that don’t dramatically affect their lives in an unpleasant and obvious way.
But they accepted the loss of many pleasures and the extension of state power (even those who previously objected to any indications of that), without being given any good evidence for why it was necessary.
And there were plenty who rejected good evidence when they were offered it, without even bothering to take a look.
I began to wonder whether many people’s lives were actually dull and meaningless to them, and the “epidemic of the century” at last made them feel they were part of something exciting.

My experience is also similar with my immediate family – although I am kind of hoping that partygate might be turning things in that department.
But all of my friends – total buy in and I have to tread very carefully so as not to end up total pariah!! time will tell whether partygate helps them also to see, but I fear that they will go into full “Ukraine war” mode and the country is in such a crisis we need Boris to lead us out of it (heaven help us!)

A very simple example: when a friend tried to book supermarket for their father with multiple conditions … it was impossible, because all the young people, who faced almost no risk, had taken all the slots because they had been terrorised by the Psyops propaganda.
Another example: old people (in countries that still did autopsies) were dying from dehydration … because the nurses were so afraid of anyone labelled as “covid” that basic care disappeared.
Your second example fits with my post expounding on why/how the early Covid deaths were artificially inflated. “Fear” probably did infect some “care-givers” who didn’t give the level of care they would have if Covid had never been identified.
In one care home I know of there were two deaths attributed to Covid, despite the fact that they had tested negative… there may have been more, though we haven’t discussed it since. If that happened once, in one place, it likely happened again elsewhere. The statistics were always a means to an end… If the MSM weren’t in on it, they would be ashamed of their lack of curiosity.

Here’s my contrarian hypothesis: Officials used the PCR tests (at 40 or so cycles of amplification) to massively inflate the number of “cases.” But it’s important to note that PCR tests weren’t widely administered to the public until after mid-March 2020. This means the PCR tests, as flawed as they are, were NOT used to “confirm” early cases, which would have given the world a much better idea about true “community prevalence.” (They also changed the definition of “cases.” A case used to be a “medical case” – as in somewhat with this label had to receive medical treatment due to their disease or illness. With Covid, for the first time in world history, you could be a “case” and be perfectly fine – not even know you were a case.) Secondly, public health agencies and the medical establishment did NOT use antibody tests to diagnose early cases (when this could and should have happened). Agreed. Apology and contriteness can be genuine and if so they can often deserve to be considered as possible mitigation. Generally speaking, though, those with big gobs have small brains and even after they’ve been shown to be wrong they’ll still be grandstanding using their big gobs. I think the government’s “response” was even more deadly than this article suggests. I’m increasingly-inclined to think that the medical response (and scare tactics) directly and indirectly CAUSED a significant percentage of the “early” Covid deaths (especially those in late March and April 2020). This hypothesis is based on the following thoughts: Many people died unnecessarily because they were put on ventilators and/or received medications that led to their deaths. That is, many people should NOT have been placed on ventilators and received these cocktails of dangerous drugs. Many people, scared of Covid, went to the hospital who would have been better off staying at home. Some of these people contracted Covid while at the hospital (because they were in close contact with people who had the virus). Others probably did not have Covid but were treated as if they did. Many people had co-morbid conditions and may or may not have had Covid, but it was their underlying condition that should have been treated … and it was probably the fact they were diagnosed with Covid that led to dangerous treatment protocols that would not have occurred otherwise. …. As plenty of contrarian experts have documented, existing and proven drugs – if given early enough – could have and would have saved many of these people. This would be more likely to have occurred if certain drugs had not been prohibited by public health guidance or if drugs given in high doses had been given in smaller doses. The conclusion is the same – official guidance probably contributed to the unnecessary deaths of many patients. Health protocols employed before official Covid were not as likely to be employed after Covid.
Lastly, the same guidance – stay away from hospitals unless you experience a really serious emergency – no doubt led to many deaths among those who died from non-Covid causes, but were afraid to go to the hospital.
It seems to me that everything public health officials did or mandated (or didn’t do but should have done) … led to MORE deaths than would have occurred otherwise.
The bottom-line for me: Early “Covid” deaths (and even non-Covid deaths) are probably significantly inflated by the faulty public health responses to Covid.
If true, the hypothesis I outline above would qualify as a massive scandal. Not a “Watergate” type scandal – nobody died in that scandal, but a scandal that resulted in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths.
By my count, there are at least four such scandals, all of which are of massive scale:

However, if “early spread” happened and was acknowledged, the Infection Fatality Rates (IFR) would have plummeted. During the months where it became conventional wisdom that the world HAD to have a vaccine to save us from this pandemic, the IFR was thought to be 3 to 4 percent. That is, 3 to 4 percent of the people who contracted this virus would or might DIE from it. Well, for those under the age of, say, 50, we now know that the real IFR is around 0.1 percent – roughly the same as for influenza. Even if you believe there is a novel virus, the reality is that according to officialdom and as was established right at the beginning, Convid has a 99.9percent survival rate from natural immunity (same as regular flu, which disappeared of the face of the Earth in 2020 – also the background risk of dying from a respiratory illness did not really change, save being ventilated unnecessarily), so allowing them to claim that there was a genuine issue with a like never seen before respiratory virus is bullcrap, no matter which way you spin it. Thanks for your comments. I’m in the camp that believes Covid is real, it’s just not a serious health risk to the vast majority of the world’s population. One reason I believe it is real is because I think I probably had it … in January 2020. I also think (know) there are MILLIONS of people like myself. We were sick with “something” that did not seem like our past cases of flu, or bronchitis or a bad cold or sinus infection. I know my case wasn’t influenza because I went to the doctor and tested negative for flu. Of course, it could have been some other respiratory or coronavirus, but I’m like lots of other people who can identify things with this bout of illness that seemed to be different. For example, I lost my sense of taste (a signature Covid symptom although I guess this happens with other viruses). I wasn’t nauseous. I didn’t have a runny nose and wasn’t sneezing and wasn’t spitting up phlegm. The acute shortness of breath was far more noticeable than the three or so bouts of flu I’d lived through. It hasn’t ended, an elderly couple near me didn’t go out for over 2 years, didn’t see family, didn’t exercise. The man even hid when the cleaner came so he wouldn’t meet her. He was ill after the booster, hospitalised twice and died last week. Two years wasted. Covid didn’t kill him, Project Fear (and probably the vaccine) did.
Smaller things will linger for years. Today I went to the hairdresser and before I sat down I had to have my hands sprayed with sanitiser. Why, I asked? He shrugged, we just have to.
And don’t get me started on churches and their addiction to hand sanitiser. Holy water is undoubtedly more effective…

I have been complaining about the attitude of the churches for the past two years, and so has our anti-lockdown prayer group. NONE of the churches have covered themselves in glory through this dismal saga.
This only will I say in their defence, that there are some vicars (the church at which I worship is one such) that have, as far they could, pushed the regulations to the limit; there are 7,000 who have not bowed down to Baal. Please don’t tar them all with the same brush, though I do have to say there are few.
I agree entirely. My church carried on wearing masks until a few weeks ago. I went back this weekend as a result, most not wearing masks but that wretched hand sanitiser still prominent. I ignored it, naturally.
Still, on the bright side, it looks like covid has killed off the handshake required as a “sign of peace” and now we can just nod to each other and say “peace be with you” instead. Would prefer a silent bow to each other, but it’s progress!
Yes at least is has already got rid of the European greeting. Have always been uncomfortable kissing strangers, not the British way. I did actually embarrass my Auntie when she came forward and I backed off holding out my hand lol.

I am a big fan of God. I’m not a big fan of organised religion – they showed their true face during the pandemic. There are many ways to worship God without needing to go to a specially set aside building to do it.

I usually ignore the bottle of sanitiser that we’re supposed to use before taking the chalice but last Sunday the Server actually stepped back and witheld the bloody thing until I anointed my hands with the poison. I gave her my best eye-roll but if she does that again I will shrug and walk away.

I had few hopes for politicians but the failure – the active failure – of public health people and purported scientists was shameful. Some aspects may well have been criminal. I’d like to see some serious punishment doled out, and not to junior people.
I hold “journalists” at large news organizations in greatest contempt. These are the people who are supposed to be “watchdogs” of those with absolute power. They are supposed to be skeptical. They are supposed to search for the truth and expose scandals and frauds. They also create all of the “narratives” that ultimately control our lives. Once these narratives have been created, they then protect them.
I still think nothing good will happen in the future until these faux journalists are exposed as frauds and all these newsrooms are purged. As long as they remain in power, all the narratives will be bogus or dubious and fraudsters will continue to be protected.
Five Live back in 2020 (I no longer listen) actually attacked people who questioned the restrictions.
