News Round-Up
- “The Covid inquiry must address misguided measures” – Adopting a version of the precautionary principle without due attention to negative consequences can never be allowed to happen again, says the Telegraph in a leading article.
- “So much for living with Covid!” – Figures from the ONS show 26% of people across the U.K. either worked from home for all or part of last week, reports the Mail.
- “The public sector is still living in a lockdown fantasy” – Too many people are not prepared to face the reality of the economic crisis, and are using Covid as an excuse to hide from it, writes Camilla Tominey in the Telegraph.
- “China’s disastrous Zero-Covid strategy is the gravest threat to the global economy” – It’s hard to see inflation easing if global supply chains remain vulnerable to the country locking down, writes Kate Andrews in the Telegraph.
- “‘This Shouldn’t Happen’: Inside the Virus-Hunting Nonprofit at the Center of the Lab-Leak Controversy” – Chasing scientific renown, grant dollars, and approval from Dr. Anthony Fauci, Peter Daszak transformed the environmental nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance into a Government-funded sponsor of risky, cutting-edge virus research in both the U.S. and Wuhan, China. Drawing on more than 100,000 leaked documents, a Vanity Fair investigation shows how an organisation dedicated to preventing the next pandemic found itself suspected of helping start one.
- “‘Shambolic’ Covid catch-up plan to give tutoring to pupils scrapped” – The Covid catch-up scheme for schools was dubbed “shambolic” yesterday after the firm running it was axed after less than a year, reports the Mail.
- “An Interview with Nick Hudson, Chairman of the Pandemic Research Group PANDA, After His Twitter Ban” – Sonia Elijah in TrialSite News interviews Nick Hudson, Chairman of PANDA, after he was permanently banned from Twitter for comparing ivermectin to the Covid vaccines.
- “How the organised Left got Covid wrong, learned to love lockdowns and lost its mind: an autopsy” – It is hard to destroy your own cause and feel righteous while doing so, yet the American left has done it, writes Christian Parenti in the Grayzone.
- “Covid and coercion: How the lockdown narrative abused Christian morals” – Somewhere, something went seriously wrong: measures implemented to save lives and preserve health stripped being alive of much of its joy and meaning, and the wellbeing of vulnerable groups was forfeited in the name of protecting others, writes Laura Calnan in the Fledger.
- “Universities in ‘Covid fantasy land’ as they stubbornly stick to online tutoring” – MPs and parents warn that time is running out for sixth formers who want to choose a course taught fully in person, reports the Telegraph.
- “Awful April arrives: Millions face £1,600 hit in household bill rise” – Utilita founder Bill Bullen, who last year urged consumers to “put a jumper on” over the winter, admitted people will die because people won’t be able to afford to put the heating on, reports the Mail.
- “Thousands more turbines could be built to treble onshore wind power” – Boris Johnson set to sign off on strategy to improve country’s energy independence in wake of Ukraine war and lower spiralling bills, reports the Telegraph.
- “Nigel Farage fails to convince Conservative voters to ditch Net Zero, poll finds” – More than three quarters of Tory voters believe the U.K. should “lead the world” in achieving Net Zero emissions, according to an entirely unbiased poll commissioned by the Conservative Environment Network, the i reports.
- “Can a woman have a penis? Three brave activists launch ‘most significant female movement since the Suffragettes’ urging public demand every politician standing in next month’s elections can answer that simple – and very direct – question” – Can a woman have a penis? A simple question, you might imagine. But not, it seems, for a flustered Sir Keir Starmer, who squirmed when asked just this in a radio interview this week, writes Maya Forstater in the Mail.
- “The NHS needs to stop asking silly questions” – Biological sex matters in healthcare, so record it, says Laura Dodsworth on her Substack page.
- “Nadhim Zahawi: Children aren’t snowflakes, so let them read books with the ‘N-word’” – In an interview with Telegraph, the Education Secretary tells teachers that “we don’t need to put warnings on things”.
- “The Cancellation of Tchaikovsky” – The theme of Tchaikovsky‘s 1812 Overture is a truly horrific event that took place when a despot lost his sense of reality. Precisely because of this, performing it is never more fitting than now, when yet another despot has gone too far. The failure to realise this signifies we have lost our relationship with the very values by which we define our culture, writes Thorsteinn Siglaugsson at the Brownstone Institute.
- “How Western elites exploit Ukraine” – Reality is manipulated to strengthen their regime, writes Arta Moeini in UnHerd.
- “Online Safety Bill” – The Online Safety Bill, as it stands, has so much potential to harm that people must be kept safe from it, writes Dylan Roberts in Bournbrook.

Good morning, everybody (with apologies to hp). “How the organised Left got Covid wrong, learned to love lockdowns and lost its mind: an autopsy” – It is hard to destroy your own cause and feel righteous while doing so, yet the American left has done it, writes Christian Parenti in the Grayzone. Lots of interesting material, but this passage might be of general interest: Despite the definitive nature of death (you’re either dead or you’re not) its causes are not always so clear. The pathways to mortality from disease are often multiple, overlapping, vague, and open to interpretation. As one coroner told me: “In many deaths from diseases, where you have multiple comorbidities, ten different coroners or physicians could possibly give you 10 different versions of the ‘immediate’ and ‘due to’ causes of death.” [28] There is a sizable academic literature on the difficulties of determining cause of mortality and the problem of death certificate accuracy. For over a century the problem has remained the same: physicians do not always agree on the cause of death. Papers exploring this topic often attempt to, you might say, “fact check” death certificates. Typically, the methodology involves a panel of physicians reviewing autopsy findings and… Read more »
No need to apologise AE. A deserved first.👍
Further to Mr. Ego’s Comment,
Covid has indeed seen the final intellectual and moral collapse of the left. It had been brewing for some time (Brexit, TDS, woke nonsense galore ……) and Covid has tipped it over the edge. It’s more a case of the Left which has left me (a veteran lefty), and a few other left mavericks, because I still share some of its values but all the post-modern/identity-politics packaging has fully corrupted the institutional ‘Left’.
I don’t want to toot my own trumpet but I have just delivered a similar obituary for my old Left here
Covid Crossdressers of the Left and Right at https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/public-health/2022/03/covid-crossdressers-of-the-left-and-right/
I hoped you would comment.
I agree with every line of your article. The institutional Left has failed what is “one of the greatest scientific, economic and moral challenges of our time” – to quote an Australian Labor Prime Minister talking on the subject of climate change.
It’s a failure of monumental proportions, which renders every word it says on any subject highly suspect to me, at least. They need to be asked what they did “during the war”. Whose side were they on?
*For the uninitiated, the Danistan Phil refers to in his article is the state of Victoria under Dan Andrews. Its capital, Melbourne, was called the “world’s most liveable city” for seven years in a row until 2017. Under Andrews, a Labor Premier, it became a living hell.
Are you familiar with the Left Lockdown Sceptics website? Might give you some hope that the old Left still exists.
Phil writes for it!
A recent excellent article:
Left, Right, Left, Right, Left … – Left Lockdown Sceptics
Ah mea culpa! Thanks Alter Ego and congratulations Phil!
Boris is going for more wind turbines to avoid Russian energy, eh?
Where does the Prime Clown think he’s going to get essential materials like nickel and copper?
And oil, every wind turbine needs 350 litres of lubricating oil every year, that is 3,500 kwatts of oil energy needed per annum to run each wind turbine.
And then where is the wind going to come from? hot air from politicians I guess.
The windmills in Finland are Made in China and have already been found to have blades that have cracks in them.
Anyone know where the windmills in the UK are made?
Free windmill with every billion LFT kits purchased?
Wind turbines, not windmills.
Hahaha you wrote my thought! Wind turbines aren’t milling anything. Distinct difference. 😉
Milling huge profits…
It is a pejorative reference. At least, that is how I use it.
Historically, windmills have performed a useful function so I don’t understand how referring to useless wind turbines as ‘windmills’ is pejorative.
I seem to remember that the existing turbines off the Suffolk coast were shipped from Germany.
There’s a factory in Hull which makes the blades – they specialise in the big ones for the offshore turbines.
It is a policy that shames the hard of thinking, but it is totally in character for todays society. When it becomes obvious that you are doing something stupid, ‘double down’ on it, do it more, do it faster, do it harder, and never, never admit that it was stupid, even though it is now twice as stupid.

Thousands more turbines could be built to treble onshore wind power” those with land must be gagging for another turbine
so that will be prices going up even more. Good work Boris.
I’ll start at the beginning. If only? With covid, with the gender identity debate with the energy and climate stuff we consistently seem to start the debate several steps down the road and fail to do the initial spade-work, we fail to define our terms and definitions, we fail to establish the facts and the figures, we fail to clarify what is possible and feasible and we fail to clarify our objectives. Maybe this is deliberate obfuscation? or maybe laziness and incompetence? The result is we chase our tails in confusion and vitriolic debates that seem to get nowhere. Nobody has ever explained to me what it is that a man trans-ing to a woman actually achieves? The pictures of Emily/Zach the trans cyclist look like a picture of a latter day Neil Young from the 1970’s, narrow hips, wide shoulders and flowing hair. So apart from looking like Neil Young from 50 years ago and winning a few cycle races, what has Zach changing to Emily actually achieved? What is now different? Grayson Perry wears pretty frocks and has fancy hair but he is still male. With the climate stuff the article above suggests a majority of people are… Read more »
It really is like living in a Monty Python sketch when grown adults cannot define a woman or answer the simple question which would pose no problem for a 4 year old; “Can a woman have a penis?” Fully concur with Julia HB on this. Common sense prevails! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSC8-CwMCuM
Oh, could I suggest a good read for Toby about the wonderful behaviour of his beloved Ukraine?
https://www.conservativewoman.co.uk/war-crimes-are-atrocious-whichever-side-commits-them/
Delingpole is right that such behaviour is unacceptable. But his point is not that the Ukrainians are particularly bad. Rather it is that we should not be condoning such behaviour. I agree, although I don’t think condoning is as widespread as he suggests.
This is a very high profile war with extraordinary publicity involving hundreds of thousands of soldiers. It is impossible to tell how prevalent bad behaviour on the part of individual soldiers is. However, there is another class of war crime which is committed higher up, such the indiscriminate shelling of civilians. Only one side is doing this.
What would you call the indiscriminate shelling of civilians in the Donbass over the last eight years?
Something that may or may not be true but is not remotely comparable to reducing Mariupol to rubble.
However, there is another class of war crime which is committed higher up, such the indiscriminate shelling of civilians.
You seriously doubt the overwhelming evidence of this “class of war crime”, committed in the Donbass over the last eight years and resulting in an estimated 14,000 deaths?
Surely it can’t be because this crime was committed against ethnic Russians.
“How the organised Left got Covid wrong, learned to love lockdowns and lost its mind: an autopsy” – It is hard to destroy your own cause and feel righteous while doing so, yet the American left has done it, writes Christian Parenti in the Grayzone.”
Lockdown is communist, that’s extremely obvious, it was implemented by a communist dictatorship that has concentration camps and copied by nearly everyone bar a few notable exceptions.
Lockdown, therefore, is as leftist as leftist can be.

‘More than three quarters of Tory voters believe the U.K. should “lead the world” in achieving Net Zero emissions, according to an entirely unbiased poll commissioned by the Conservative Environment Network, the i reports.’
Did they conduct the poll outside a Waitrose by any chance?
Three quarters of Conservative voters gave up their freedom, hid behind masks and lined up for mRNA gene therapy.
IT WAS A NSA FRONT. It’s not even very well hidden.

This is an even better article on how and why the ‘progressive professionals’ embraced Covidian authoritarianism et.al. than the Grayzone’s.
In a nutshell, to them it’s now mainly a tool to eliminate competition for the better jobs.
Thanks for the link, JayBee. It is indeed an excellent article.
Time is not on the side of deceivers; obscurity beckons.
I see that France has finally added the UK to its green list, so the unvaccinated no longer need a compelling reason to travel there. Interesting that this change hasn’t been reported by MSM. Obviously news that only affects the unworthy unvaccinated isn’t worth reporting.
“The theme of Tchaikovsky‘s 1812 Overture is a truly horrific event that took place when a despot lost his sense of reality. Precisely because of this, performing it is never more fitting than now, when yet another despot has gone too far.”
But which despot are we talking about?
Since 2020, the world has been teeming with despots.
“Thousands more turbines could be built to treble onshore wind power”
Not. Good. Enough.
We need to install three-thousand times our current wind capacity, because 3000 x 0 is more than zero.
It… it just must be.
Can a woman have a penis?
Similarly can a man have a vagina? Presumably only if you’re a … like Starmer.
