“Taliban Treated Me Better,” Says Pregnant New Zealand Journalist Stranded in Afghanistan

A pregnant New Zealand journalist stranded in Afghanistan for months has found the Taliban more helpful than her own Government, which has failed to let her back in. MailOnline has the story.

Charlotte Bellis, a broadcast journalist, said she has repeatedly tried to return to New Zealand since she learned she was pregnant in September.

She has submitted 59 documents to New Zealand officials in Afghanistan in an attempt to secure an emergency return home, but her bid was turned down and led her to turn to the Taliban, one of the world’s most oppressive regimes, for sympathy.

It’s a particularly cruel twist of fate for the woman who was revered worldwide for her fearless questioning of the jihadist group’s previous record on women’s rights.

To add insult to injury, Ms Bellis has warned that pregnancy can be a death sentence in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan because of the poor state of maternity care and lack of surgical capabilities.

Speaking to 1News about her situation, Ms Bellis asked: “To the NZ Government, I ask what do you want me to do? I have done nothing wrong I got pregnant and I am a New Zealander.

“At what point did we get so bogged down in these rules we’ve come up with that we can’t see that she’s a Kiwi in need of help and she needs to come home?”

Although the spread of COVID-19 has been limited in New Zealand and just 52 deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic, the nation still requires citizens to spend 10 days in isolation hotels run by the military.

The ‘zero Covid’ policy has repeatedly come under fire and the strict self-isolation restrictions have now caused a backlog of thousands of people desperate to return home.

Ms Bellis has become one of the most high-profile Kiwis to fall victim to New Zealand’s extreme border controls, as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her Government face further embarrassment over their own policies.

Writing in the New Zealand Herald on Saturday, Ms Bellis said it was “brutally ironic” that while she had once questioned the Taliban about their treatment of women, she was now asking the same questions of her own Government.

“When the Taliban offers you – a pregnant, unmarried woman – safe haven, you know your situation is messed up,” she wrote. …

Last year, Bellis was working for Al Jazeera covering the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan when she gained international attention by questioning Taliban leaders about their treatment of women and girls.

In her column on Saturday, she said she returned to Qatar in September and discovered she was expecting a baby with her partner, freelance photographer Jim Huylebroek, a contributor to the New York Times.

She described the pregnancy as a “miracle” after earlier being told by doctors she could not have children. She is due to give birth to a girl in May.

Extramarital sex is illegal in Qatar and Ms Bellis said she realised she needed to leave. She repeatedly tried to get back to New Zealand in a lottery-style system for returning citizens but without success.

She said she resigned from Al Jazeera in November and the couple moved to Mr Huylebroek’s native Belgium, but she could not stay long because she was not a resident. She said the only other place the couple had visas to live was Afghanistan.

Ms Bellis said she spoke with senior Taliban contacts who told her she would be fine if she returned to Afghanistan.

“Just tell people you’re married and if it escalates, call us. Don’t worry,” she said they told her.

She said she sent 59 documents to New Zealand authorities in Afghanistan but they rejected her application for an emergency return.

Meanwhile, the toothy tyrant is ramping up the restrictions in a crazed attempt to maintain Zero Covid in the face of Omicron.

Ardern announced a swathe of new measures under the country’s Covid Red Alert system, meaning a return to universal mask-wearing and stricter quarantine requirements for New Zealanders.

The PM rolled out the restrictions after just nine cases of the Omicron variant were detected in a single family that flew to Auckland for a wedding earlier this month.

Under limits incurred by New Zealand’s My Vaccine Pass, those who are unvaccinated will be unable to eat at indoor restaurants or visit gyms or hairdressers.

Any Kiwis working in health and disability, education, fire and emergency, police, defence, and corrections must be able to show proof of having vaccines.

From February 3rd, the wearing of bandanas, scarves or t-shirts pulled over the nose in public places such as gyms and cafes will be banned.

And under new Covid curbs enforced by Ardern, all residents must wear face masks in public areas such as shops and there are limits on gatherings to a maximum of 100 people from Monday after a cluster of Omicron cases were detected in the country.

The changes mean Ardern was forced to postpone her own wedding.

Anyone testing positive must now isolate for 14 instead of ten days – and household contacts have to isolate for an additional ten days on top, leaving them to stay indoors for 24 days.

Odd juncture at which to get pregnant, methinks.
How about going to New York eh?

If she had been told by her doctors that she couldn’t have children, I guess she felt “precautions” to be unnecessary, which, although speaking as a male, seems logical to me.

The happenstance timing couldn’t be worse, but she is clearly pleased to be enceinte, and very good luck to her. Where she is really unfortunate is in being a citizen of NZ, a country which has lost all sense of proportion, morals and respect for its people. It is difficult to reconcile the fuss over “saving lives” with the inhumane treatment, dished out by the despicable Ardern and her underlings.

That’s because it’s nothing to do with saving lives.

They have certainly proved that. They are so hubristic that they are incapable of any self awareness. It would be funny if it wasn’t so cruel.

“Enceinte”. Reminds me of that Arnold Schwarxenegger film (dubbed into French) where Arnie tells a woman “je suis enceinte” (or should that be “enceint”?). As I remember, she fainted, though I suspect in real life she simply wouldn’t have believed it (though apparently these days you can get women pretending to men who get pregnant (hence the term “birth parent”)).

I find the whole of the last two years an odd juncture at which to get pregnant. I appreciate this may be the point, In part, to contribute to Op Depop. I look at colleagues and friends who’ve had babies recently and wonder if they realise what sort of future their kids will have to put up with.

That’s one of the miracles of The Deadly Disease[tm]: Afghanistan is frequently featured on the evening news because of the absolutely terrible people who are ruling their and brutally suppressing the population. Strangely, actually, exactly as strangely in camps of would-be illegal immigrants, they don’t have any problems with Sars-CoV2 there and even the most ardent supporters of the harshest corona measures for their own people don’t mind this in the least.

With some honourable exceptions the NZ public are so dimwitted that the toothy tyrant could tell them any nonsense she liked and the dullards would lap it up. The average Kiwi is like a lamb to the slaughter.

Both she and Trudeau got re-elected recently, I know people say better the devil you know, but seriously they are both complete psychopaths. You can just go through the list of traits and tick everyone of them, Trudeau is even a Drama teacher / actor, perfect training for a politician.

As I recall, his thespian or histrionic talents extend to “black face”. I’m surprised that he hasn’t been “cancelled”, one way or the other, but I guess it’s more about who you know, rather than what you do.

As well as a “black face”, he appears to have a mile-wide “yellow streak”, since he’s run away from the Freedom Convoy. Handy excuse, this “covid isolation”, which always kicks in when troubles threaten. A prison cell, with discarded key, might be better.

All politicians seem to regard the people as their slaves once elected. But can you imagine a ‘Conservative’ politician getting elected after doing this. The woke mob would be ‘outraged’ and traumatised.

Perhaps they only believe untruths that they’ve paid for?

It’s quite amusing really. The whole western MSM supported the carpet bombing and invasion of Afghanistan for their military industrial complex paymasters (plus wars are good for sales). Yet the ‘evil’ god fearing Afghanis are far nicer than the woke authoritarian atheist order followers in western regimes!

Makes you question if we have been told the truth about certain past events and the perpetrators. No Muslim ‘extremist’ has ever taken away my freedoms or made me stay at home, the media problem, reaction solution agenda has though. The real demons are closer to home and their messaging enter the publics minds via the media each day. Until we stop supporting the powers that shouldn’t be from killing foreigners the suffering and enslavement at home is only going to get worse.

As P.J.O’Rourke put it “If you make eye-contact with an Arab [/Muslim/Afghan…] you have a friend for life”. The distinction between Group and Individual Psychology is much more extreme than in the individualist West.

This story is such a crock. After 2 years of the media feeding people BS, this is just a continuation. I understand the point is to highlight Ardern’s ridiculous 0-Cov policy, but this sob story is absurd. Belgium recognises cohabiting partners, I see no reason why they could not stay in Belgium, or move to another EU country that allows EU nationals to bring in cohabiting partner (e.g. NL). The comments in the Mail show most people seem to think she is back in Afghanistan – even though there are no direct flights from Europe. No one questions the fact her partner is an EU national, giving both of them certain rights. Nor the fact that they could simply, like, get married? I don’t care if they do or not, but rather marry and divorce than live in Afghanistan I would have thought. She also says Afghanistan is the only place ‘the couple’ have visas for. He can live in 27 EU countries without a visa; presumably part of the problem is that she wants him, a non-NZ national, coming to NZ with her? If one wants to attack New Zealand’s corona response, perhaps focus on the 52 deaths from… Read more »

The Mail is one of the worst for ‘covid denier’, ‘anti-vaxxer’ and ‘anti-masker’ type stories. Absolutely dreadful paper who have pretty much supported all the tyranny in the name of covid. Following the staged US ‘retreat’ stories you would have guessed all the westerners were being executed on the streets, unfortunately it was another media staged event and all the western propagandists are alive and well.

Can you imagine the response in the west if Afghanistan sent hundreds of ‘journalists’ (social engineers) to their nations to change their cultures? western journalist seem to want everywhere in the world to socially resemble Seattle and Portland without considering what the locals want.

On a related note, a new animal protection law in Germany demands that dog owners allow their animals to regularly socialize with other members of their species. No such protections are offered to people who, for example, lost all their social interaction due to “pandemic” restrictions. That is, Germany now officially treats its dogs better than its people.

“Talliban treated me better than New Zealand”.

reminds me of a story a few years back reported by the late, great Christopher Booker. He was covering the abuses by Social Services (SS) and the secret family courts. He reported how a mother had been threatened with having her children removed for no good reason, so she fled to Turkish Cyprus as a refugee from Britain, where she was treated with kindness and understanding (but not of the people who had done this to her). Places like Turkish Cyprus and Afghanistan, I fancy, could teach some of these “liberal” countries about treatment of children (and indeed women).

reminds me of a story the late,

And another thing. The story I heard is that Muslim countries are completely tolerant of public breast-feeding and consider it normal, and that it’s only countries like the UK where people have hang ups about it.

Her baby-daddy is a Belgian citizen. If he is actually her “partner”, and any sort of man, he would have asked her to marry him, and if she was any sort of rational human being, she would have said yes. End of problem.

This is an attention-getting device by what I can only assume is a crazed femynist who is trying to monetise a predicament of her own creation.

Return to tradition, or suffer the consequences of progress.

As much as I despise the Saintly Horse and have been creeped out by her from Day 1 (unlike most), this story is too fishy to believe. So she was in Belgium with her partner… why didn’t she just stay there? Are we to believe that the Belgian government would have forced her out of the country? Where to… oh, NZ, where she comes from? But she, instead, takes a flight to Afghanistan… What a load of cobblers. There are other things going on here. Frankly, I don’t care. There are lots of people in the world far worse off than her who are not Aljazeerah journalists and so don’t get any attention.

I don’t have any sympathy for her. Why doesn’t she just marry the father her baby? Problem solved. She won’t get in trouble in Qatar. Belgium will surely let her stay. I hope that she is not foolish enough to trust the Taliban. And as evil as the nz regime is, it is preferable to the Taliban.
