Independent SAGE Graph in Viral Tweet Misleading: Omicron Is Mild in Children
In a recent viral tweet, the new German Health Minister, Professor Karl Lauterbach, shared what seems like an alarming graph:

It shows daily Covid hospital admissions in England for all children (i.e., those aged under 18) since the start of the pandemic. Lauterbach wrote:
The UK data shows alarming levels in children. Since Omicron can be warded off well by masks, mask requirements in school and regular testing are absolutely necessary.
Incidentally, the graph itself was produced by Independent SAGE – the group that’s like SAGE, only more pessimistic about Covid and more in favour of restrictions (and not an official Government advisory body).
So, what should we make of Lauterbach’s tweet? One of the stylised facts of the pandemic is that Covid poses almost no risk to children. Has this ceased to be true in the era of Omicron? No, fortunately it has not.
One reason that Covid hospital admissions for children shot up in late December is simple: infections shot up at around the same time (in the first week of January, more than 6% of the population tested positive). And when more people in the general population are infected, the number of people admitted to hospital with Covid will rise.
Under simple assumptions, if the percentage of the population that’s infected jumps from 1% to 6%, then so should the fraction of people admitted to hospital with Covid.
Another possible reason Covid hospital admissions for children shot up – suggested by Professor Russell Viner of UCL – is that Omicron has a greater impact in the upper airways, which are smaller in young children. And as others have noted, this feature also makes Omicron less deadly.
Yet another reason, notes the FT, is the introduction of treatment guidelines requiring babies who develop fever to be put under hospital observation.
Indeed, a new study from the U.S. confirms that Omicron is less deadly than Delta – even in young children. Lindsey Wang and colleagues compared two cohorts of under 5s: those who caught Covid for the first time during the Delta wave, and those who caught it for the first time during the Omicron wave.
The two cohorts were matched on a large number of relevant variables including age, sex, race and pre-existing health conditions. Results are shown below:

For all four outcome variables considered, the risk was significantly lower among those who caught Omicron. To take one example, only 0.14% of the Omicron cohort were admitted to the ICU, compared to 0.43% of the Delta cohort.
What’s more, as this graph from the FT shows, the recent uptick in paediatric hospital admissions for Covid isn’t large relative to seasonal peaks for other child respiratory viruses:

Returning to the German Health Minister’s tweet, the totality of evidence does not suggest that “mask requirements in school and regular testing are absolutely necessary”. In fact, I’d describe them as ‘absolutely unnecessary’.

One reason for that would be because masks don’t work.
0.14% is one in every 700 children. With not necessarily from Omnicron. Likely with other illness e.g. asthma. Not really a big problem compared to other childhood illness is it?
Isn’t Independent Sage just a group of rabid authoritarian Karens?
and btw, how many of those kids admitted WITH a positive test are vaxxed?
I damn well hope these children are not perforated.
This sort of thing is extremely unfair to those sensible ladies who happen to be named Karen.
Someone shared a website with an hour long talk on the history of the vaccine including the Polio Vaccine. Can you remind me the website please or a link?
Interesting statistics:
That’s terrifying. What are we going to do about the cold problem then? Do Independent SAGE know about this?
Don’t give them ideas!
The answer is to stop eating meat, obviously. 🍖
And stop burning stuff to generate heat. 🙂
It’s pertinent to remember that, after one of his famous (oops again!) exaggerations, Ferguson stopped us eating meat by dint of having animals slaughtered and burned. The heat generated, however, warmed only the planet and not its humans.
I tried that, but I still caught some colds.
If we’d have shut all schools, made speaking, gathering and exercising in public illegal, then surely we could have prevented 90% of these deaths?
…and whenever you think this should have started, I think we should have done it sooner and harder.
And all worn face nappies, obviously!
Independent SAGE are a real problem I know that much. My own sister, a PhD who should know better, has followed them throughout, believing them to be counter-narrative(!) She came up for the Holidays with all kinds of Christmas Hits, including such classics as:
🎄 We should have locked down sooner
🎄 Masks definitely work
🎄 It’s not the first time that lockdowns have been used to control infectious disease outbreaks.
🎄 If I had children I’d get them vaccinated
Have you tried telling her they’re a political lobby group?
I didn’t think of that at the time; I was busy trying to work out where to start.
Don’t start just tell her to fuck off every time she opens her mouth
Have you tried telling her to fuck off
Or just hand her the card
This would come in so handy at our family dos – full of hand wringing, sanitising, ‘stay safe’ quoting sheep. Probably cause a bit of fainting and my expulsion from the event. A win-win in anyone’s book.
That would have made for an unhappy Boxing Day. I instead employed quiet internal festering rage and familial disappointment.
Like a close relative of mine who told me that I would die of covid if I didn’t get boostered. It wasn’t what was said, it’s the fact it was said with a kind of relish, as if I was going to get my just desserts. I also noticed that any hint of my negativity towards all the covid/vaccine crap was met with lips pursed tight as an arsehole and sneaky sideways glances to other fellow covid worshippers. It was quite unnerving. We haven’t spoken since.
You know we’re in a strange place when close relatives are warning you of your impeding death “with a kind of relish”.
It’s really brought out the worst in people. Which, I suspect, was at least partly the aim.
I have to recognise the fact that nobody in my family, the vast majority boosted, tried hard to chance my mind on vaccination.
It seems that they were so afraid that they’d take anything they were told to without question, but that I wasn’t worth even having a conversation with.
The conclusion here is that they simply don’t care about me anyway. Or, maybe this is the ability to hold two opposing thoughts at the same time, believing both 100%,as Orwell foretold
A mate of mine who didn’t get jabbed has been harassed by his sister to get the jab, until he mentioned, ‘your kids are at the age now to get jabbed’. That seemed to have quietened her down a bit.
I went and joined the kids watching cartoons in the other room whenever anyone mentioned Covid or restrictions – and I actually enjoyed myself more than I usually would have.

🎄I am completely aware of Pfizer’s history of corporate malfeasance.
🎄It’s a once in a century outbreak
🎄The reason Africa has had such good covid outcomes is that they are used to infectious disease outbreaks and locked themselves down instinctively

That last one is really clutching at straws!
Cognitive Dissonance is a cruel master.
No it’s not! /s
Africa locked itself down instinctively? All 1.3 billion of them? All 54 countries? Amazing, what coordination, certainly puts the haphazard, mix and match response that existed in the EU to shame. Let’s not even discuss the level of hospital care, hygiene, handouts to struggling businesses, etc. Have you asked her how she thinks Africa achieved such a lockdown? Does she think the entire continent resembles London? That everyone there can easily WFH, is she mixing up the presence of the Amazon in South America with the presence of the Amazon parcel service in Africa? Yes, Africa does have gorillas, but I don’t think they do deliveries. Seriously, just 30 seconds of thought would show that her idea that a lockdown in Africa would resemble one like in the Western world is beyond absurd. Tell her a definite difference between Africa and Europe is the signficantly lower vaxx rate. As as aside, good for you for not falling out – for years now there has been a cultural movement in the West trying to destroy its very foundation, and destruction of the family is part of it. At some point she will have to stop living in denial. Remember, the most… Read more »
It made for painful listening. She lectures in and has written books on African political science. I’m not kidding. But it’s that refusal to accept what sounds like madness: that politicians, regulatory agencies, the media, and several universities have been captured in order to serve narrow corporate interests, that’s what ‘educated’ people can’t seem to grasp. It’s something that seems so obvious to me but they literally can’t see it, won’t listen to the evidence for it and my attempts to explain it end up with me being gaslighted and made to feel like a tin foil hat wearer. It’s maddening!
Conservative MPs seem to be ignorant of the WEF or just pass it off as some conspiracy.
Also, as a rule the most highly educated work in the public sector, (usually since no one else will employ them or they’d have to do actual work, or both), they’ve been receiving 100% pay and benefits- and sometimes bonuses for ‘working from home during a difficult time’- so why would they want to think any differently? Plus most of them are pious dicks.
The last one is really brilliant: All of the world is used to infectious disease outbreaks as the regularly happen every year.
It’s a corker isn’t it but was said to me with a straight face by an expert.
We’ve heard of death by Powerpoint. This site is at risk of turning into death by graphs.

a big willy?
Myself and all members of my family which includes 3 children all had omicron recently and I can testify that it has all the lethality of dandruff. We’re all un-jabbed so I suppose we took the full brunt of what it could deliver, which isn’t a lot.
I’m very sorry to hear that. I hope you are all now vaccinated, to be on the retrospective preventative pre-prophylactic safe side.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, this scary episode has compelled us all to see the light and ‘get with the programme’ as they say.
All of us are now on a 3 week course of Head & Shoulders. The wife, who treasures her barnet, has opted for the Pantene treatment “because she’s worth it”, whatever that means.
You do know the Phase 3 trials aren’t due to be completed until 2023 don’t you?
It’s a risk we all agreed was worth taking. You never know, it might develop into split ends or worse.
Does washing hair in water have a lower all-cause mortality?
There’s no such thing as water! Stop being anti-science.
I hear the CDC is changing the definitions so that soon you’ll need to take two bottles into the shower.
The CDC as usual following the science. I wear a mask in the shower which sounds mad but since I maintain the regulatory 2 meter distance from the shower head actually means it stays dry. It’s science, you see.
10, 10, 10, a perfect score!
Brilliant 🙂
Excellent stuff 🙂 May you recieve a thousand up-ticks!
This is truly game-changing stuff.
Are all anti-dandruff products equally effective, or does it have to be H&S?
Anything as long as it’s not Russian.
H&S is the brand leader but there are some notable runners-up. There’s Whittys Wash and Go and Van Tam’s Toupe Touch. Both excellent in their own right but subject to some nasty after affects like alopecia and bald-face lying.
👍
One of my favourite posts of the day EXCEPT you must have tested to conclude you had. “omicron”.
Tests are evil.
Actually, I didn’t but the kids did and the wife (works NHS). I felt slightly sub-optimal and assumed I had it as well. Carried on working anyway.
This is a pandemic of media-driven propaganda, whose poster boy/girl/non-binary/they/etc. is the rabid BBC. They MUST be brought down, it is imperative for democracy and society in general.
Indeed. I’ve hardened my previous stance of forcing them onto a subscription model. Now I favour disbanding them completely. Shut it all down.
Break it up and sell it off. Reclaim the word British which may still be worth something, if it can be detoxified/untarnished, from their branding.
I wouldn’t sell any of it off. It needs destroyed, like cancer cells. Our basic motivation is that they abused their extremely privileged position and that is unnacceptable.
Who would think of making an entertainment drama about Saville. I give you the BB fucking C they really do need destroying.
I say we take off and nuke them from orbit; it’s the only way to be sure

‘Never before has so much harm been done to so many by so few… based on dodgy data’: A blistering verdict on Covid ‘experts’ from MP BOB SEELY in a landmark speech
Nice to see this in the Daily Fail
I see that Sainsbury’s are going to “ask” shoppers to continue to wear muzzles from tomorrow. Isn’t that exactly what they did last July after “Freedom Day”? Since muzzles are no longer a legal requirement in shops from tomorrow, Sainsbury’s can’t do anything to customers who refuse to wear a muzzle.
Sainsbury may not be able to do anything, but I can do something to Sainsbury and that is not go into their shithole shops
Or Tesco, or any other retailer that has tried to bully me into submission.
Local Tesco has been fine this time round (had a few run-ins with their door guardians during the previous muzzlification law period).
I’ve not worn a mask in a supermarket at any point. Never been challenged. I note many of their staff don’t wear them either.
Had a few glares from the faithful. But also some winning smiles from maskless ladies 😉
Ditto. In fact I’ve found that shop staff have generally been very friendly towards me.
Me too. I’ve detected a note of relief when chatting to the staff.
Who wants to make small talk with pushy hypochondriacs?
Ditto, strange that.
The same lads and lasses are all still On the tills at our Tesco, 2 years on none of them seem to have died.
Isn’t it strange that we’ve not heard of the grim reaper taking a swathe through supermarket staff?
Or the homeless, as many have pointed out.
Or the Amish people!
Same here. Never had a problem in any shop. Most of Tesco’s staff have been unmasked since last July.
If the weather was warmer I would have a T shirt printed with “Take your mask off, you don’t need it” or similar on the back and wear that to the shops. Mind you, the way things are going, I will probably get that opportunity as I bet masks are still popular come the summer.
Is that because you’re a brick shithouse?
Exactly what they did to me during the mask mandate periods – absolutely nothing! As in July, I predict most people will continue to wear a mask.
Our SITP group has been doing coordinated visits to local supermarkets, maskless of course, not as a group, just individuals doing their shopping but all at around the same time We think it’s more important than ever that we keep doing these in future so those who might want to take their mask off but think they will be glared at will be encouraged by seeing a good number of people with unmasked faces.
I agree. There are a lot of people just playing along. I’d like to think they may take courage when they see others mask free.
perhaps I can ask them if I can take my goods from their shelves without paying?
Anything that reduces footfall is not a good business model, plus all the agro, so why are they doing it?
A key point to remember is that Professor Karl Lauterbach is somewhat akin to the German Covid Hitler. The guy has been stirring up panic in talkshows for the entire 2 years until having been made health minister. Upon assuming this position, he solemnly declared that the pandemic is not going to end until the end of his 4 year long term. This is also the same guy who by surprise changed the recovered status from 6 months to 3 months overnight in Germany – with exception of members of the parliament. Needless to say, anything which comes from this strange individual must be considered extremely suspect by default.
Oh, I forgot yet another brilliant quote from him “with mandatory vaccination in place, everyone is going to eventually voluntarily vaccinate”.
His current achievements include ordering millions of new vaccine doses including buying some unwanted ones from Romania.
So Sainsburys, John Lewis and Waitrose are going to continue with masks mandates after they expire legally this evening.
Can’t imagine what the connection between these three is, and why they are doing it…
In the meantime Asda here I come.
If businesses think we will continue with this they can think again!
Waitrose and John Lewis are sister companies i.e. Waitrose is the food retailing side of JL, so that hookup is explained. No idea why, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there was some idea of protecting their “Partners” aka “staff”.
Sainsburys (who years ago used to be an advertising client of mine) were, and are a po-faced bunch, so this is to be expected.
Indeed, why let (all the) facts get in the way of a good story from the ‘scientists’ at Independent SAGE, or any other SAGE come to that.
As a courtesy to me, please remove your face mask. It tells me that your vaccines and mask don’t protect you, or me. You know you are a disease vector, who should be at home yet you are happy to infect the unvaxxed. Thank you.
The COVID industry desperately wants omicron to be more deadly, and so it manufactures evidence that it is.
More policy-based evidence-making.
Down with this sort of thing.
I wrote the Chief Executive of my local NHS Trust about policy-based evidence-making driving the decision to cancel hospital outpatient and clinic appointments during 2020 and 2021, asking to see the assumptions and workings behind that decision about a month ago. She hasn’t got back to me yet. I think she’s busy hiding under her desk, or counting PPE items.
More policy-based evidence-making.
Nice one, RAD
Not my own work but thanks anyway!
and this is why there’s no omicron in all those countries with mask mandates…
Amazing how he can get away with simply stating such nonsense as an unquestionable fact. How on Earth does a piece of cloth or paper that’s been regularly mauled and crumpled ‘ward off well’ an airborne virus?
I posted this over on Today’s Update but it’s relevant here too. — We received a letter today regarding our son. It has four logos on top – the Dept of Health and Social Care, Imperial College London, Ipsos MORI and the NHS. I’m not sure whether having so many logos at the top is supposed to impress me but if so it failed and made me wonder who exactly is driving this and why. Anyway, the letter invites us to get our son to “take a test to help the NHS now”. “COVID-19 remains a threat. Measuring and understanding the spread of COVID-19 and any interaction with flu will help the NHS and keep businesses and services running. This will allow everyone to continue to access the services they need. Your child’s participation is still important even if they do not have any symptoms, have recently been tested or they have had COVID-19 in the past. It is important to monitor the spread of COVID-19 in children whether they are vaccinated or not” (their bold) If we sign up we need to complete a questionnaire and our boy needs to do a swab test which will be analysed for… Read more »
You have now been scheduled for execution. Please report to your local recycling centre.
I wonder if we were “randomly” selected for this survey because we haven’t submitted any test results for our kids – because we haven’t been testing them – because there is no point – because the treatment for their symptoms remains the same whether we know they have COVID or not.
They were doing this for adults last year. Out of the blue, my missus had a letter saying that she had been randomly selected from GP records (if I remember aright), need to check spread and the rest of it. In common with anything in the post with “NHS” on it or a mainly blue envelope, it hit the WPB in seconds.
Only if you’ve made an appointment!
What the hell do ICL or, more so, Ipson Mori – a polling company, have to do with it? In ‘normal’ times, i.e. perhaps the late 20th.C was still almost normal, I’d expect this type of communication to come from the NHS or DHSC.
Universities’ role then was research and teaching. Private polling companies er, did opinion polls for clients. It was relatively simple to allocate responsibility.
I too find myself now repeating Thatcher’s line –
‘No, no, no.’
If the true COVID deaths do turn out to be about 20,000; well, for comparison, Hong Kong flu killed 86,000.
I was there … studying for my O levels. Normal life went on. My future wasn’t disrupted or ruined.
Also posted on the Warble Gloaming bandwagon article
SARS-CoV-2 is an upper respiratory tract infection, irrespective of strain, which is why the tests are based on swabs in the nasopharyngeal space. As the disease progresses it can get into the lower respiratory tract, in adults this can be pneumonia and in younger children as bronchiolitis. The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is not caused by the virus directly but is due to the immune system itself going into a hyperinflammatory state. Likewise Distributed Intervascular Coagulation (DIC) and thrombocytopenia are immune mediated conditions, again due to inflammation.
Disease is caused by a pathogen and the immune response. Sepsis and septicaemia being the extreme manifestation of this.
If there wasn’t testing of children then they would be sent home with a viral infection and to return if child becomes very unwell, none of this observation malarkey unless clinically required.
Very akin to the state over-reacting causing more harm than the virus.
And as if by magic:
https://dailyexpose.uk/2022/01/26/cdc-announces-changes-to-the-definition-of-fully-vaccinated/
Fortunately the definition of Fully Unvaccinated remains the same & becomes the universal reference point.
They’re not really changing the definiton of that, rather trying to phase out a term which has lost its usefulnes. The new term is supposed to be up to date on vaccinations, ie, you’ve had all shots the CDC currently thinks you should have had.
These are not good people.
Just came across this on misleading figures, Canadian in this case. Someone may already have posted it earlier but I didn’t see it…
Alberta just inadvertently confessed to fiddling the COVID vaccination stats. (substack.com)
A lot of it going on. I posted this yesterday:
Gott im Himmel!
The “pandemic of the unvaccinated” was caused by a computer glitch. That was the conclusion of the Health Minister of Germany Karl Lauterbach, after months of vilifying the unvaccinated in the nation’s second largest city, Hamburg.
https://thenationalpulse.com/2022/01/24/oppressive-covid-measures-for-the-unvaccinated-were-based-on-software-error-claims-german-minister/
WTF??!
They found a final solution….
Söder has done the same in Bavaria: Vaccination status isn’t consistently being propagated from authority to authority. And everybody whose vaccination status is unknown counted as unvaccinated when being admitted to hospital. It’s also very unlikely that this was an oversight: Paper vaccination passports have existed in Germany forever (ie, I already had one when I was a child in the 1970s). As people must constantly present them in public life, everybody who got admitted to hospital probably either had it with him or easily accessible at home. Apparently, nobody bothered to check this if the computer data record said unknown.
They need to lie about the severity of Covid in children to persuade governments to sanction the jabbing of children which indemnifies Big Pharma from law suits.
“They are never going to market a vaccine, allow people access to a vaccine, an approved vaccine without getting liability protection. Now the emergency use authorization vaccines have liability protection under the PREP Act and under the CARES Act.
So as long as you take an emergency use vaccine, you can’t sue them. Once they get approved, now you can sue them, unless they can get it recommended for children.
Because all vaccines that are recommended, officially recommended for children get liability protection, even if an adult gets that vaccine.
That’s why they are going after the kids. They know this is going to kill and injure a huge number of children, but they need to do it for the liability protection.”
https://wsau.com/2021/12/31/robert-f-kennedy-jr-explains-why-fauci-is-going-after-children/
I don’t know the UK legal situation.
The US situation sounds even more corrupted.
The UK doesn’t … yet … have childhood vaccine mandates. Without jabs, in some US states children can’t attend a state school.
Hancock … of course … tried to introduce these here. Fascist.
GHF, I think this is an important point. I have no kids myself so does anybody know if a similar situation exists in the UK re once a vaccine is on a “children’s register” manufacturers are excused liability for injury or death?
In the UK it will be interesting to see what happened in March when the ’emergency’ legislation is supposed to be coming to an end.
Cycled 25.36 miles this morning. I estimate that I took 1,200 breaths of cold air (unmasked obviously) or about 720 cubic litres. Am feeling more energetic than I did before setting off. Not a single cough so far. Surely I must have picked up a few viruses. Should I check?
While writing this I’ve just received yet another text message from NHS-NoReply (not local gp) inviting me to attend a covid clinic, (the 5th since the 9th November). If nothing else, they are persistent buggers but then so are midges.
If I was the victim of that I’d sue them for
harassment
sending unsolicited e-mails
a breach of data protection laws
a breach of the right to privacy under the Human Rights Act 1998
etc.
It can be done in an English county court using the small claims procedure, i.e. without needing lawyers. I’vew done this against other companies in the past.
The NHS is now sending me information on COVID vaccines work which I told them to stop sending in early 2021. By then it was already obvious these jabs were a disaster (the GM ones) or a waste of time (the conventional ones). So I think I’ll be suing ‘NHS Digital’ at some point.
I’ve still got a complaint pending with the ICO against NHS England for their behaviour earlier in the year (repeated letters and texts, refusal to stop despite being asked a number of times, rejecting my complaint to their data protection officer).
Been a few months now and heard nothing since original acknowledgement – but the ICO is probably under government instructions…
I’d be inclined to issue a ‘notice before action’, make sure you have proof it’s delivered, wait 14 days (the statutory time limit for ‘simple’ cases), then sue.
There’s a legal precedent from the 2010s that, even if no harm or distress results, if personal data is misused the litigant is entitled to damages in the low to mid £100s, say £300-350. This is merely on principle, i.e. data protection is important.
If one can prove distress, or financial loss, the damages would be more.
But will the courts agree that it’s misuse? NHS England is adamant that harassing people about the clotshots was justified – the courts so far have shown little sign of standing up to this sort of attitude.
I have only had one of those but I am 73 so I expect I don’t matter to TPTB
Bollocks!
“Omicron is less deadly than Delta”
Fine. But the important point is that Delta isn’t ‘deadly’ in the first place by any sane criterion.
Good point. It’s a bit like quoting the number deaths from shark attacks as being under 200 when in actual fact it’s under 20 as someone pointed out last year. Both true and completely misleading at the same time. Why can so few people see this?
Lauterbach is half crank, half pharma shill and half “Save the climate”-agitator (three halfs being an allusion to a poem by Schiller 🙂 ) and he’s just recycling one of the Corona staples which have been with us since 2020. In principle, this could be disregarded out of hand. If one really wants to spend time with it, the simple way to shoot it down would be: Mask requirements and regular testing coexist with the described situation. Hence, if that’s alarming, both are obviously not helpful against it.
But, employing modern vaccine logic, imagine how bad it would have been without masks!
I’m a programmer and I find this illogical stuff highly annoying (Should I perhaps lobby some politician so that it gets labelled as hate crime in future?): That’s based on the presumption that masks work. But if the situation becomes alarming despite they’re being used, there are only two possible explanation for that:
Old joke I just remembered: Imagine you’re on a ship that’s sinking because of leak, what remedy would suggest itself? Answer: Drill a second hole into the hull so that the water can get out again. Holes are very effective at letting water get out of something! That’s the exact same kind of reasoning: If a hole in the hull was effective at getting water out of a sinking ship, the ship wouldn’t be sinking because there is already a hole in the hull.
At this point, the seasoned Corona-warrior would naturally suggest that there’s no second hole in the hull yet, hence, we don’t know for certain that it wouldn’t let the water get out.
🙂
