The British Public is Having a Periodical Fit of Morality
We’re publishing an original essay today by Dr. James Alexander, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Bilkent University in Turkey and a regular contributor to the Daily Sceptic. He explores what sort of behaviour and attitudes it’s possible to morally condemn in contemporary Britain – anything that offends against the Unholy Trinity of Covid, Wokery and Climate, or is evidence of hypocrisy – and points out how difficult it is to morally challenge what has become, in effect, the official morality of the state. Here is an extract:
The modern state, stripped of the church, has established its own morality. This morality is an almost wonderfully historically self-defeating morality – our enemies laugh at it – whereby we absolutely condemn almost everything our ancestors ever did to establish us where we are, and we relatively condemn the minor hypocrisies of those who now rule us. This is the morality of theoretically marginalised class. Since, ironically, this morality has been adopted by the ruling class, and certainly by the higher educated class, it is also the morality of the actually privileged. Almost all of our elites are therefore hypocrites, to a man – and woman. We are in a state which has a morality that owes nothing to the church, which has had to invent its own moral absolutes, and which has done so in self-condemnation. It is what Nietzsche called a slave-morality. It is the morality of slaves. But it is not a very stable morality of slaves, since those who until now almost always formed the slave class don’t believe it while those who are the master class do believe it and, even worse, impose it condescendingly on everyone else.
This is upside-down morality. Expect to be lectured about your privilege by a university teacher. Expect to bow and scrape a bit if you are wealthy or privileged. Expect no consideration at all if you are a member of the honourable old religious working class. And not much if you are a member of the dishonourable old secular working class: unless you can pose as somehow victimised and ask for some sort of stipend or sympathy from the professionally guilt-stricken classes. Expect to be told to wear a mask. Expect to be told to take a vaccine. Expect to be pilloried if you object.
Like all Dr. Alexander’s essays, this one is very much worth reading in full.

Liberty has always sheltered in the hands and minds of the few.
The majority are always asleep, dreaming, plugged in, juiced up.
I come from an entirely different generation, a different era. It was hardly perfect, but it wasn’t “asleep, dreaming, plugged in, juiced up”.
You betray those things which you yourself want to do.
“those ‘unholy trinity’ ones of COVID, WOKERY, and CLIMATE)”
Many of the hysterical condemnations of supposed sins against these dogmas are every bit as absurd as the (apocryphal) supposed Victorian practice of covering up exposed table legs because they were supposedly “too sexy“.
If truth is still a thing in future generations, they will mock this period and the fanatics of the unholy trinity ever bit as much.
Ironically false witness, idolatry, and being an accessory to murder (by attempted denial of medical treatment) are now permissible by worshippers of this unholy trinity, as also are swinging, and adultery (Ferguson) brushed under the carpet, and denying the right to worship. Somehow the new so-called ‘morality’ manages to trample over and break most of the old morality, but then the golden rule is presumably passé if humankind is a pernicious polluting cancer destroying the planet, and only oneself and a few others should survive.
I have previously compared Covid absurdity to the 17th Century Tulip Mania where solid upright merchant citizens lost their fortunes over the price of a single tulip bulb, including super brainy Sir Issac Newton. We grandly look back at that 3-4 year episode with bemused contempt and wonder WTF was that all about ? The idea that middle class Victorian England thought that “shapely lower chair legs drive a young man’s thoughts to fancy” Or as Derek & Clive might have put it “Gore blimey them sexy table legs gimme the f*ckin’ horn mate” “best not work on a furniture shop Clive, might get you onto trouble”. my well be apocryphal but in todays world of Male football they are covering up real peoples legs for what I regard as a cultural import (enrichment ?). I am not a race bater and make no comments about ‘Dingy Divers’ but . . . I have no particular interest in Male footballers legs but, if you cast your mind back to say the 1970s, football shorts were little more than Boxers while socks were just instruments to keep shin pads in order or flapped around the ankles. Couldn’t agree more.
Great article.
I have read Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism over Christmas.
My big fear is that the new Holy Trinity is an ideology that contains many of the seeds that Hannah Arendt traces from anti semitism and imperialism into fascism and Bolshevism. These ideologies then led to totalitarianism when combined with a society of people who were rootless and lacked meaning.
We have much of that in place today.
It’s a great book. And she goes on to say that totalitarianism ends up consuming itself.
But I frequently ask myself how quickly?
I look at North Korea and shudder.
2 generations as per The 4th Turning. At least, and if a people is lucky.
Forget analogues and labels for a while – ‘Totalitarianism’ at root is simply about elites dominating a populace by political and coercive force, and stripping away the counter-balances that we like to think of as ‘democratic’. The impulse is as old as the hills.
In the current case, we have the network of rampant, out-of-control global capital as the dominating elite, co-opting governance across the globe.
Global capital?
That is a Marxist fallacy.
In fact, the world is dominated by German philosophy, of which Marx is a part but not the whole.
I follow an American Guy who has lived in Germany for 5 years now and his videos on how he sees life. In his latest output he wondered how Hitler became so popular and how he manged to fool people.
In my comment I pointed to the similarities to today, only to be told I am focused on myself and the virus is not fascist.
I wrote a long, angry reply pointing out the similarities, of course he is now not engaging in any further comments.
Read ‘Ominous Parallels ‘ by Leonard Peikoff.
Peikoff demonstrates that Hitler came to power because of German philosophy, in essence, what Germany taught. Germany put the ideas taught in the country into practice and Hitler was the result of that.
Lockdown is the result of the same ideas taught in Germany , just repackaged. Green ideology originated in Germany and it’s been taught for decades now. Ask yourself what happens when it’s put into practice.
It isn’t fascist but it is evil.
Very good essay indeed.
Solshenitzyn’s respective warning also comes to mind.
The most absurd development to me is that the theoretical basis of that state morality which developed over the last 250 years and was practiced more or less widely since the end of WW2 in many Western nations, namely the preached liberalism, tolerance, progressiveness and absolute supremacy of inalienable individual rights for everyone, has been discarded completely now for all those who disagree with that new morality, or rather ‘fake’ morality or fanaticism, du jour, above all by those who call themselves liberal, progressive, tolerant and constitution revering.
And that not only on an instititional level, but first and foremost again on an inter-personal one:
the main side effect of the ‘vaccines’ was the complete loss of the real moral compass in most of its recipients, it seems.
George Carlin expressed and forecasted the consequence very well:
“PC is fascism pretending to be manners.”
And Stephen King was even more eerily prescient:
“In The Stand, I got a chance to write about what happens when we finally realize that our technology has outraced our morality.”
Nothing to do with serious ‘morality’ – just power play and political manipulation. As to the church – that was always the role of its preached ‘morality’
I thought it was about a relationship with God. Otherwise the Church could just have agreed with the state.
“For our enemies the mask is a moral argument. The vaccine is a moral argument.”
And because of that, it becomes a moral argument for everyone – the response to coercion by bigots should always be refusal to comply. That’s a moral imperative, right there.
How did this come about, who funded all 3 elements of this “Unholy Trinity” into existance?
“There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil, to one who is striking at the root.” – Henry David Thoreau
Hint: it wasn’t State, or Church.
It seems we need to go through this phase of lunacy whether we like it or not. All I can do personally is stick to my principles, be not ashamed of who and what I am, or the country I reside in. I will be patient and wait until the carnage is over and the dust has settled. People like me and you will be needed in future. The future is not what these criminals and psychopaths would have you believe. Mankind and humanity will come to its senses eventually and there will be a lot of work to do.
These past two years have opened the eyes of many and they are not the same person they were in March 2020.
The trouble is all the legions of people who previously seemed to be on the side of human rights etc who now support measures which remove/ignore/restrict them. I fear that they more than make up for the ones who’ve woken up. 🙁
Correct about slave morality. A free person has free will with which to choose (discriminate between) good or evil. A slave is like a dumb beast who does what the cattle herder, or tyrant, orders with a stick.
Worshipping ‘freedom’ has led to absolute slavery and the abolition of reason too. Freedom is the freedom to choose the truly good, not a mere absence of restraints, still less the validation of politically sanctioned ideology masquerading as truth.
James Alexander has a long-winded way of saying we are forced to live in society of “upside-down morality” where people are afraid to state facts or speak truths – and he blames this on ‘political correctness’.
Unfortunately, Dr Alexander falls victim to that which he complains about. In fear of the recriminations that might follow should he speak the truth, he uses their own coded language to hide the true nature of the beast.
Political correctness is in reality cultural Marxism, but you cannot say it without offending a certain, very powerful, special interest group who insist that cultural Marxism is a ‘conspiracy theory’. They are consequently very keen on preventing the origins of this cultural cancer from entering the public domain.
You only need to read what happened to Brexit Minister Suella Braverman for the sin of drawing attention to cultural Marxism.
So yes, the current destructive inversion of morality, and indeed reality itself, has its origins in cultural Marxism.
It would be helpful in the future if those that lecture about this great evil that has descended upon us have, at the very least, the courage to speak its name.
Define “Cultural”. Don’t give me a book.
Yawn….
Amen.
Might I call it culture? The late Andrew Breitbart said: culture leads and politics follow. Trying to change culture by politics is like trying to wag the dog by the tail. Wagging the dog is what DT’s hyped-up Evangelical minions think he can do. The UK will only get more and more BJs, because his Sixties mindset is in control. Visualize Orwell’s Ministry of Truth with Sir Lord Earl Duke Godhead Mick Jagger grabbing his crotch on the parapet, screaming into a microphone: “I’M GETTING YOUR SATISFACTION – WORSHIP ME”
Today’s UK culture WANTS Boris. It LOVES Boris. American culture IS DONALD, in the same manner.
It is what is WANTED.
Alexander is dead-bang on target.
Get used to it. It’s what we have. It’s where the future IS!
Suck it up. The Sixties (Mick and Frankfurt School and Kinsey and Leary and Marcuse) have won.
to hell with it.
I have a bit of a problem with equating Boris and Donald. They are very different people. And if the UK apes US ‘culture’ as it mainly does, then the ‘covid, climate, wokery’ is far more ‘blue’ than ‘red’. Unless you have have two feet in the grave you are also a child of the 60s.
Yes, Boris Johnson has his own hair
Boris Johnson? Kim Jong-Johnson, you mean
We’re a free country, you can’t stuff us back in the bottle, however much you want to ‘infantalise’, ‘keep safe’ etc. All we need is them to provide decent services and back off
The modern state, stripped of the church, has established its own morality.
….
It is what Nietzsche called a slave-morality.
But, of course for Nietzsche the church, particularly the Christian church, was also a slave morality.
On balance I prefer the Church to Nietzsche, who was wrong about almost everything as well as not practising what he preached.
Both offer only Altruism, the morality of sacrifice and death.
I don’t think so, but what’s your preferred alternative?
What a load of abstract verbal diarrhoea. For a concrete point of focus regarding the intersection of “government” and “morality”, if anybody wants one, take what’s in the top headlines across the British media right now: the allegation that Tory MPs have been subjected to blackmail in order to coerce them into not supporting a no-confidence motion against their party leader, the prime minister. Personally I think Boris Johnson is in a much weaker position than most (generally highly fickle and superficial) “professional” political commentators are currently opining. I’m still standing by my prediction that he will leave office by February at the latest. However, he is not quite out for the count yet. One element that has probably been introduced by his side in order to bolster his position is the suggestion that attempts to blackmail MPs are a matter for the London Metropolitan Police. Are people f***king joking? Johnson was Mayor of London for eight years. He’s got great relations with the London police. Almost all city mayors around the world are mates with the city cops. Just think of all the illegal drugs, prostitution, and gambling. Dear reader, the cops take a cut from all that and… Read more »
I am a victim, a 50 year victim of the middle class liberal establishment.
I don’t give a shit. I was just in Sainsburys, the only one there without a mask. I got even more glares than usual, yet on Thursday, it all stops. What is wrong with these people? What is going on in their heads? Do they really think the virus will literally switch off on thursday, but until then they are in danger??
Never thought I would ever hate 90% of my countrymen. Till now it’s only been about 48%
I know how you feel. Totally shocked by how easily my fellow human beings capitulated.
They are blind being led by the evil. Yet they blinded themselves, and agreed to the evil.
I am so sick of this covid aka great reset nonsense. But I undertake as a duty to inform people about facts about cheaply, effectively and qucikly curing this so called virus symptoms. Search for c19ivermectin on your search engine. On that website you will find as of right now there are 142 studies. 93 of them are peer reviewed about curing covid19 with ivermectin. These are undeniable evidences. Get your ivermectin before it is too late https://ivmpharmacy.com
