How’s He Going to Get Out of This One? Fresh Allegations Emerge That Boris Attended Drinks in the No. 10 Garden During Lockdown
Fresh allegations have emerged that Boris Johnson attended a social gathering during the first lockdown. Unlike with previous leaks, this gathering appears to be purely social in nature, being described in an email from the Prime Minister’s Principal Private Secretary Martin Reynolds as “socially distanced drinks in the No. 10 garden”, inviting attendees to “bring your own booze!”. It is hard to see how this can be explained away as work-related and not a social gathering, which were banned at the time. The same day it took place, May 20th 2020, Oliver Dowden, then Culture Secretary, urged the public only to meet one other person outdoors. Witnesses say the Prime Minister and his wife were among around 40 attendees, and Boris refused to deny the allegation in an interview on Monday. The Telegraph has the story.
The email, which was obtained by ITV News, said: “Hi all. After what has been an incredibly busy period it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No. 10 garden this evening.
“Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!”
Unlike other leaks relating to gatherings during the pandemic, the email is particularly damaging for the Prime Minister because it appears to make clear the event was solely a social gathering.
Downing Street has insisted that other events, including the gathering Mr Johnson was photographed at in the garden on May 15th 2020, were informal and related to work.
On Monday Adam Wagner, a leading lawyer and expert on Covid regulations, said: “This looks unlikely to be legal for attendees. Being outside the home was illegal at the time unless (the only potentially relevant exception) it was for the need to work. ‘Socially distanced drinks’/’BYOB’ don’t sound like work.”
Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, said: “It is terrible and I think many people that see the evidence now will not only think that Boris Johnson’s lies are catching up with him, but will see it as absolutely despicable that when they were actually told to follow the rules, Boris Johnson and No 10 were breaking the rules.
“It is disgraceful and he should be ashamed.”
On Monday, Liberal Democrat spokesman said the party planned to report the leaked email to the Metropolitan Police.
The force has previously said it does not typically investigate historic allegations that lockdown rules have been breached.
It is understood that the email will now form part of the official probe being carried out by [Sue] Gray.
In recent days, her team has been asking a number of officials in No 10 about the use of the garden and the consumption of alcohol.
On Friday, she officially expanded her investigation to include the two gatherings in the garden after Dominic Cummings, the former No. 10 Senior Adviser, said he had told Mr Reynolds that he believed the event breached lockdown rules and should not go ahead.
Despite raising the issue, Mr Cummings said he was “ignored”.

I confess, these revelations are getting kind of tedious now. Plainly, Government figures played fast and loose with the rules they were imposing on the rest of us, not really believing them to be necessary. Much like Professor Pantsdown and Matt Hancock and their lockdown hanky-panky, the people driving the restrictions clearly didn’t actually think there was a virus so deadly circulating that people couldn’t risk getting close to each other. Everyone knows by now this is the kind of thing they were up to. I suppose they should resign over the rank hypocrisy of it – though Neil Ferguson did resign and that didn’t last long – but really they should resign over the absurd, draconian policies that made their behaviour hypocritical in the first place. But that’s never going to happen, and neither will anyone resign over this except perhaps Martin Reynolds. Still, if it helps to turn the public against this miserable regime then that’s probably a good thing – though with Labour only ever outflanking the Government on the side of Chairman Mao, part of me fears what might come after.
Stop Press: Boris says Martin Reynolds has his “full confidence” and will stay in post. Is this because he was only doing what Boris told him to? We’ll see how long it lasts.

Yes but remember Johnson and others in government told everyone they had stay in at home and used the police to promote this. Our leaders should be seen to be following their own ‘guidance’ and suffering the consequences if they don’t. That said, I understand your point. What’s of at least as much concern is Boris’ drive to impose his ‘legacy’ on the country, NetZero.
There are already backbenchers objecting to it as the cost begins to unfold. Theresa May announced £1.4Tn cost as though that would be the end of it. But that’s only the cost to the Taxpayer. Every household in the country will be forced to spend £100,000 to have their homes NetZero compliant. Roughly £3.5Tn of taxed money straight out of consumers pockets.
And when have we ever known a government budget to come in on target. In the not too distant future the £1.4Tn will turn into £5Tn+ as the entire national grid requires upgrading, every street in the UK is dug up to install electric vehicle chargers and associated upgraded cabling from substations.

My question always is “why weren’t they scared for their families like the rest of us, what were they aware of that we weren’t”. Suspect you are right. They are one reason why the Dictators , whether elected atm or nascent in waiting, they won’t be abandoned, as with some form of restrictions. If the restrictions are lifted so that businesses can say – “we don’t need to see your vaxpass” – they will fade away. So they won’t.

Technology isn’t always sinister. If you would rather we went back to the days when an emergency visit to a hospital required a week’s wait for your medical records to be delivered by hand, you’re welcome to it.
You don’t need to download any apps to view your ‘Vaxx Pass’. I’ve seen mine. Although here we have to go through our bank accounts to get to our ‘Own Health Files’. Mine says 0/2 for the vaccines so can’t be used for travel. My partners shows 2/2 jabs – so she can use hers for travel.
But, of course, hers is only valid for 9 months after her 2nd jab… it’s the 3rd jab before June for her, or she becomes ‘not fully vaxxed’.
My partner had her 2nd jab in August. Pfizer Comirnaty. No noticeable side effects, still alive. I did suggest to her that she didn’t get the jabs, but she wanted them.
I also haven’t seen my vax pass because I haven’t been ‘vaxxed’.

To my knowledge, any disclosure to your bank of a health status is illegal unless you have authorised it.
Travel is contingent upon your carrier and the laws of entry into the country you are travelling to. If an airline is happy to let you fly without you being vaccinated, it’s up to them.
Having or not having a vaccine is not a government imposed restriction on travel.

The bank doesn’t know our ‘Government info’ – it’s just that access to this is through using your bank codes here in Finland. ‘Own Health Files’, Social Security, Unemployment Benefits, Insurance, Driving Licences, that sort of thing.
Not being ‘fully vaxxed’ for entry to the UK means you have to pre-purchase 2 PCR tests, and it’s a 10-day quarantine supervised by Serco’s Test & Trace with the aid of Mitie marshalls (snoops).
You won’t get past the check-in at an airport unless you have your ‘Covid papers’ in order.
Even the ‘fully vaxxed’ will have to present their Passenger Locator Form + proof of pre-purchase of an LF test kit.
You might find an airline that doesn’t care about your Vaxx Status, getting to their plane is another matter.

I have had a look. It’s pretty sinister. A company called Entrust was awarded a couple of contracts last year to produce Cloud computing software for “Covid Passes” for the NHS. This company is owned by the Quandt family – who have strong links to the NaZi party, who are step-grand-children of Joseph Goebbels.

I have a mate who was head of H&S for a major UK Newspaper group. His approach was that H&S must be used only to get a job done safely, it must not get in the way of the job getting done.

I’m a retired archaeologist and whilst a lot of my former colleagues are fairly ‘down to earth,’ there many some project managers who are obsessed with high-viz and hard hats. A classic example was on TV this week where Alice Roberts was at a site on the line of HS2. In a field in the middle of no-where everyone was wearing bright orange garb and those sodding lids. The only threat I could discern was that of pigeon poo or a phantom train ahead of scedule. What is it with these people, are they plain H&S crazy?

You are confusing “universal unity” with “government”. During feudal times you’ve had monarchs whose vassals were constantly competing among each other, even fighting wars with each other, but still (usually) not threatening the monarch’s power, but rather sucking up to their immediate upper rank lord, knowing that they were more or less at his mercy. As it is, Sunak and Truss seem to be front runners for the job. The last female they had running the country was a monumental disaster so I think Truss will fall at that hurdle.
