Most Democrats Wrongly Believe That Vaccines Provide More Protection Than Natural Immunity

I’ve written before about people’s skewed perceptions of the risks of Covid. Interestingly but perhaps not surprisingly, perceptions are more skewed among Democrats than they are among Republicans.

As recently as September of this year – that is, more than a year and a half into the pandemic – 41% of Democrats said the risk of hospitalisation if you’re not vaccinated is at least 50%! (The true figure is at least ten times lower.)

A new survey reveals another fallacy that’s widespread among Democrats. On 15–16th December, Rasmussen Reports put the following question to a representative sample of Americans:

Which is more effective in preventing COVID-19 — natural immunity from prior infection with the virus, or getting vaccinated against the virus? Or are both natural immunity and vaccination equally effective?

The correct answer, according to the polling company, is that they’re “equally effective”. I’d beg to differ – several studies have found that natural immunity provides more protection. However, the correct answer surely isn’t “getting vaccinated”.

Among Republicans, 43% gave what I regard as the correct answer of “natural immunity”, and only 25% said “getting vaccinated”. Yet among Democrats, a sizeable majority of 61% said “getting vaccinated”, while only 17% said “natural immunity”.

There is one caveat. Some respondents may have interpreted “Which is more effective” to mean “Which is a better way of acquiring immunity to Covid”. And at least for the elderly and clinically vulnerable, the correct answer to this question may well be “getting vaccinated”.

Having said that, the most natural interpretation of “Which is more effective” is clearly the one the polling company intended, namely “Which protects better against infection”.

So, why does such a large percentage of the US population – 41% overall – wrongly believe that vaccines provide more protection than natural immunity?

Well, it’s actually not surprising when you consider how many scientists have denied or downplayed natural immunity to Covid. Recall last year’s John Snow Memorandum, which stated, “there is no evidence for lasting protective immunity to SARS-CoV-2 following natural infection”. (The Memorandum was co-signed by CDC director Rochelle Walensky.)

People can hardly be expected to have accurate beliefs when scientists aren’t giving them accurate information. At this point, a correction is surely in order: ‘We got it wrong: there is evidence for lasting protective immunity following natural infection’.

The article needs to be updated to show how many times lower.

The vaccines don’t confer any immunity at all against covid-19 (PHE data shows they may even make you more susceptible). only prior infection does. vaccines may or may not prevent serious illness and death but that wasn’t the question

Democrats (and leftists in general – though not all, obviously) believe an awful lot of stuff that is complete balls, from childish fantasies about Trump being some kind of crypto-fascist, through the outright, cynically manipulative lies they were fed – and swallowed enthusiastically – about “Russian collusion”, to all the usual leftist bullshit about the diabolical trio: covid, climate. woke.

That said, these thing go in phases. Not so long ago it was Republicans who were the ones falling for the propaganda bullshit about Iraq and “weapons of mass destruction”.

You are clearly correct. I just heard Labour’s Chris Bryant (on the BBC, so unchallenged) state that the Barrington declaration is dangerous misinformation created by American right wing extremists. I do hope Sunetra Gupta sues the worm for libel.

Not sure you really need to caveat for the possibility that they not only misinterpreted the question but also decided for no apparent reason to restrict its application to one small part of society.

These people are just flat out gullible, ignorant and/or stupid.

If you don’t know that the vaccines do NOT provide any immunity by now, there is not much hope for this site.

Back to what the NHS leaflet said in March last year: “We do not yet know whether it will stop you from catching and passing on the virus”. Now they know.

Usage of the term “natural immunity” is often loaded with propaganda. The term should not be used to denote only the strengthening of your immune system once you have beaten off a symptomatic infection – i.e. basically a memory effect involving antibodies and a prior illness.

Antibodies are not the first line of defence of our immune systems. There are easy ways to keep the first line strengthened, reducing your chance of getting ill in the first place. This should be, but isn’t, common knowledge – partly because billionaire interests can’t patent physical exercise, vitamin C, vegetarianism, vitamin D, etc.

Also if there were more public understanding of the difference between Covid and SARSCoV2 there wouldn’t be such confusion over whether a question is asking about immunity to infection (which may cause a minor sniffle you hardly notice) or prevention of getting double pneumonia etc. (which obviously you will notice and which may kill you).

Don’t blame scientists — the only scientists that have been allowed to speak are the ones that support government policy.

Its a loaded question – “natural immunity” being a loaded phrase.

Traditional (ie real) vaccines do not produce “unnatural immunity” – they simply induce the body’s immune system to create “natural” immunity.

There really is only immunity and not-immunity. Your body gives you immunity, the mRNA jab gives you not-immunity.

Surely this is a non-question. The only way you get natural immunity is from getting covid. The whole purpose of vaccination – which of course has its own perils – is to spare you the potentially nasty effects of the disease if you do get the virus.

TheyLiveAndWeLockdown

It’s not a vaccination then!

It’s prophylactic.

To mandate it when the side effects to those who choose other equally effective and interventional prophylactics such as budesonide or lemsip are much lower is insanity!

But there are also people who are fiercely against vaccination. Who don’t believe in science, they’re often also misogynists, also often racists. It’s a small group that muscles in. And we have to make a choice, in terms of leaders, in terms of the country. Do we tolerate these people?

Is Biden picturing three-year-olds moving along surrounded by phalanxes of bodyguards to protect them against the unvaccinated? Or does he not understand even the official bullshit about “vaccination”, believing instead that immunity is transmissible?

Reports in the BMJ (26/11/20) and The Lancet (20/4/21) demonstrate that the efficacy of the
injections in terms of Absolute Risk Reduction is approaching zero. Therefore any claim that the injections protect people from COVID- 19 is clearly fraudulent.
However, rather than require drug manufacturers to use proper metrics to prove real effectiveness, government regulators have chosen instead to look the other way and allow the fraud to continue unabated.

The campaign for “vaccination” acquires new clothes as time goes on. For example in France right now, Emmanuel Macron has said he wants to “give shit” to (emmerder) the unvaccinated. That is strong language and it’s important that it’s understood as such. It’s not being translated right by the British state broadcaster. They are saying Macron said he wants to “hassle” us. The Daily Heil are a little more accurate when they write that he wants to “p*** (us) off” (asterisks in the original). But even they are not conveying the violence of Macron’s language. “Emmerder” is a MUCH stronger term than “hassle” or “piss off”. If anybody is any doubt about that, please click here to watch this song by the anarchist musical group Berurier Noir in which they sing that young people “emmerde(nt)” the National Front (now called National Rally). Watch that performance and tell me “emmerder” means “hassle”! But so much for the language point. What Macron is doing is taking the war to the enemy, as a national leader “raising the standard” the way Charles I did at Nottingham. There are Gaullist references all over the place now in French political culture – and I don’t… Read more »

err yeah. If you really think it’s a killer disease then you’re going to run out and get jabbed rather than risk your “50% chance of death” (their thoughts not mine) by natural immunity.

Natural immunity can only be arrived at by a complete failure – ie because you actually got covid in the first place. The level of immunity conferred will depend on time since vaccination/infection. And there are studies that draw the exact opposite conclusion (eg https://www.immunology.org/coronavirus/connect-coronavirus-public-engagement-resources/covid-immunity-infection-vaccine). So all in all, this is another poorly constructed article designed for covid sceptics.

I’ve had so many arguments with family about this for such a long time now. I’ve been told and sent videos as evidence that the vaccine is better than natural immunity. I’ve had to remind my parents that they sent me to Uni to do my chemistry degree and as such I have training, knowledge and understanding of these things, (my then girlfriend did a biology degree and I wrote her dissertation) plus I did biology GCSEs and a levels. while non of that makes me an expert I’m much further down the line of understanding these things than they are. my sister in law is especially annoying, as obviously some crank on the internet pushing propaganda videos is more believable than actually reading the mhsa yellow card reporting or the ukhsa or other official bodies publishing raw stats. lastly the vaccines work by getting your body to produce what looks a bit like covid for your immune system to then produce anti bodies. the reason why so many of us feel so Ill after a jab is because our bodies are attacking things it’s made with small bits that look like cv rather than a replicating virus that is… Read more »

No, getting Covid shots is never the right answer, for anyone, regardless of age or health status. The right answer is early treatment, which has been available since day one of this debacle, the diametric opposite of what our esteemed health authorities have been telling us.
