SNP Tells Scots Not to Dodge Covid Restrictions by Celebrating New Year’s Eve in England

John Swinney, Scotland’s Deputy First Minister, has called on Scots not to cross the border into England to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Doing so goes against the “spirit” of the Scottish Government’s Covid restrictions, he says. (No, really?!?) BBC News has more.

Scots have been urged not to travel to England for New Year celebrations to get around the more stringent Covid restrictions north of the border.

There is no travel ban currently in place to stop people going to England, where nightclubs are still open.

But Deputy First Minister John Swinney said doing so would go against the “spirit” of Scottish Covid measures.

He said travelling would be “the wrong course of action” due to the “serious situation” with the Omicron variant.

Case numbers in Scotland hit “alarming” record highs over Christmas and Boxing Day, with the faster-spreading strain now accounting for the majority of all infections.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who is to update MSPs in a virtual sitting of the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, said she expected the figures to rise even more in the days ahead.

Scots have been encouraged to stay at home as much as possible, and to limit any social gatherings to no more than three households.

Large events such as Edinburgh’s traditional Hogmanay street party have been cancelled, with extra curbs in hospitality settings and nightclubs shut down entirely.

Clubs remain open south of the border, where no new restrictions are being imposed, but Swinney told BBC Breakfast that he would “discourage” anyone from travelling to England to see in the new year.

He said: “People are free to make their own judgments. But what we have got recognise is that Omicron is a serious threat to absolutely everybody within our society and we have all got to take measures to protect ourselves by limiting our social contacts and connections and by complying with the restrictions we have in place.

“I think it is the wrong course of action for people to take because we have a serious situation we have got to manage and we encourage everybody to play their part in addressing that.”

People in England have been urged to be “cautious” while socialising, by taking lateral flow tests and sticking to well-ventilated areas.

Ms Sturgeon is to update MSPs on the latest data and plans when Holyrood is recalled from recess for a virtual sitting at 14:00.

Given that I will be sober NYE, if I were local i might wait outside at closing time and offer some Scots a free lift home for supporting a local business.

By not charging this would avoid falling foul of insurance small print and private hire taxi regulations.
I imagine Facebook would be usefull to make arrangements in advance.

The “spirit” of the COVID restrictions? The ones imposed because you saw England weren’t imposing new restrictions and you had to act stricter than them?

Even after scientists admitted that Omicron is milder than Delta and far less likely to cause hospitalisation, the SNP refuse to budge and hope to ruin a second Hogmanay in a row. Their COVID policy is trying to look better than England to the world, and thus strengthen both domestic and international support for Scottish independence. The millions of livelihoods promptly ruined as a result? Hardly matters to the SNP.

There are more people going and protesting against these restrictions – even the typically SNP-supporting Celtic fans – but unfortunately the damage has been done. The SNP still has many years to force through its COVID mandate before the next election comes, then they’ll cry independence, and they’ll get re-elected, and repeat.

I often defend Scotland’s electorate (living here) but you’re right, until the independence crowd accept it’s never going to happen & repeatedly voting SNP because they promise it, is actually destroying Scotland and the illogical irrational obsession with independence, so they can join the EU just adds icing on top of the stupid cake.

Reply to  Anti_socialist

The irony of course being that the EU would take far more of their precious “freedom” than Westminster does, but of course it’s not about independence as much as it is about hating England and the whole independence movement is essentially a racist/nationalist one entirely built on emotion and with no consideration of practicalities.

The Covid NYE debacle is just the latest in a long line of humiliations Scotland has suffered every time it starts to imagine it can achieve anything on its own. Hopefully the ruination of Scotland on the altar of Covid will have a Darien Scheme like impact on the independence fanatics’ inflated sense of self-worth and bring them back to reality. In the meantime – the pubs of England await in the spirit of British fraternity.

Plaid Cymru are the same.
Why do they hate the English?
Because some Welsh get rich by selling holiday homes to the English at double the price other Welsh can afford.

Yes. Large organisations and institutions at worst pay fines. Personal responsibility is spread out and blurred so that no one ultimately pays the price.

Individuals on the other hand go to jail. No problem establishing personal responsibility with an individual…

So, let’s get this right.

The Scottish government introduces farcically disproportionate measures for political reasons (there being no medical and scientific reason to increase restrictions for a much milder variant), and when people lawfully circumvent the disproportionate and illogical measures in their own best interests then they are acting against the ‘spirit of the law’. Well if the spirit of the law is politically motivated then there is nothing inherently wrong with going against that spirit. In fact, it can be a good thing.

Who cares about going against the ‘spirit of the law’ when that very spirit is a spiteful one by a hateful government? If avoiding harm is going against the spirit of a law then so be it. Scottish ministers should stop acting as though they had some sort of moral superiority. They haven’t.

Except that’s bollocks, isn’t it? The virus has only ever been a threat to a very small minority within society, and this scariant appears to be a threat to pretty much nobody as it’s just a cold.

Yes – it’s total lies, but it’s what’s in his script. I doubt the omicron variant has killed a single person, or caused a single person to be hospitalised.

Johnson is lying too:

“According to some of the surveys I’ve seen 90 per cent of people in ICU are people who are not boosted. So think about that, think about the risk you’re running with your own health if you fail to get a booster. “I’m sorry to say this but the overwhelming majority of people who are currently ending up in intensive care are people who are not boosted. I’ve talked to doctors who say the numbers are running up to 90 per cent of people in intensive care who are not boosted.”

So they haven’t got a reasonably reliable estimate of the percentage? Doesn’t the Nazi Hygiene Schervisch keep records?

“I’m sorry to say this, but – “. Yeah, right. Why doesn’t he go the whole hog and say “I’m not lying to you, but -”

Meanwhile in Liverpool, the provocation:

What he really means is that Omicron (i.e. a seasonal cold) is a threat to the cretins who have been running this freak show since March 2020, because their lockdowns have failed, their masks have failed, and their so called vaccines are not just a failure but a public hazard. As hundreds of thousands if not millions that are jabbed get reinfected they feel the game may be up.

And in their infinite mediocrity they can think of nothing else than to continue to peddle fear and division in a desperate effort to keep the pitchforks at bay.

Did Swinney or Sturgeon actually use the word “England” when they told people living in Scotland they shouldn’t travel to England? They hate England and the English so much that they often use euphemisms. Otherwise they’d have to clean mouthfoam off their clothes every day. SNP supporters say the words somewhat more often than their leaders, usually with a snarl, except when they’re saying that English people should have more pride, want national independence, and be keener in larger numbers on traditions such as morris dancing.

Many people living in Scotland are English ethnically. Many have family members in England. Many travel to England for other reasons. They are welcome, at any time of year. Have a good time, lads and lasses. F*** the SNP to hell.

Went to supermarket this morning, one or two of us unmasked. Children unmasked. One family, dad masked, two children unmasked and mum masked carrying new born baby. The illogic demonstrated by this family shows the complete farce that is mandatory masks in supermarkets, especially since it is thought in some circles that children can infect other people, hence masks in school. NYE may be the only time that England has welcomed an invasion by the Scots and the Welsh at the same time.

Moronic is not, and never will be, a “serious threat to absolutely everybody within our society”. When one considers even idiots on jab level 3 are still catching it, and you read the reports that show that the un-jabbed are less likely to catch / pass it on than the multi-jabbed, you have to ask “When does the bullshit end?”.

How does this work for Berwick Rangers FC? They are based in England but play at some level in Scotland. Therefore they could legitimately invite their opponents on Saturday to come over the border on Friday evening. The supporter base for Swansea City, Cardiff City and Wrexham will suddenly increase by several thousand if those teams are playing away against English teams over the weekend.

The ‘spirit’ of restrictions? I watched someone who had great ‘spirit’ for restrictions yesterday as he walked alongside a road in the pouring rain, wearing a thoroughly sodden mask. Remember, the message is that the mask is worn to safeguard others, not the wearer. There wasn’t a single other person within sight, just cars rushing by, spraying him with even more water.

This is the psychosis the Scottish government want to see. That’s the spirit you fucking lunatic.

This is a re-rum of 1989 with thousands of East Germans (now Scots and Welsh) voting with their feet.

Look how that ended Swinney.

Got to see the funny side. The SNP leaders’ attitude is

“Don’t game the law with us, you disobedient filth. Do whatever we WANT you to do when we give you a command. We don’t need no stinking lawbooks or badges.

No prizes for guessing what they’d be like if they got an independent country under their control.

And this is from types who’ve never in their whole lives filled in an expenses form or grant application without fiddling the hell out of it to maximise how much goes into their pockets from the public purse.

And when they get us into electric cars that will be connected to the cloud, the Master’s will be able to track our every move in real-time.

And isn’t it amazing how the Master’s got all the protesters that used to push-back against big banks and greedy corporations to now fight for the introduction of all of above?

The thickos that used to call for the burning down of banks, are now more vociferously calling for us all to be injected with gene control serums.
