UNISON Calls for Schools to Be Allowed to Close Early to Fight Omicron Spread

The trade union group UNISON has said that allowing schools to close early will halt the transmission of the Omicron variant. While the union has stopped short of demanding that schools be closed, it has called for more measures to be imposed on the classroom, such as mask mandates. The Express has the story.

Schools have been at the centre of countless restrictive measures over the past two years, with pupils suffering major disruption to their education thanks to decisions made by the Government and promoted by key unions. The emergence of the Omicron variant has reignited calls for measures that would further such disruption.

UNISON insists that schools should be allowed to close early “without the fear of Government criticism” to reduce the spread of the variant.

It has argued allowing schools to shut ahead of schedule in the run-up to the end of term would benefit both parents and teachers.

It said: “Allowing schools to close early this week would reduce the risk of Omicron transmission, make Christmas less stressful for families and give staff more time to get their boosters.”

UNISON claims to represent more education staff than any other U.K. trade union.

A spokesperson for the group told the Express that while “we don’t want to see schools close”, new measures are needed to prevent further disruption.

It has called for the return of face masks in secondary school classrooms, as well as the return of “bubbles”.

The union is also pushing ministers to send air filtration devices to all schools before the New Year to help temper the spread of the virus when – or if – pupils return to the classroom.

UNISON’s Head of Education, Mike Short, said in a statement: “Stopping the virus in its tracks and keeping pupils and communities safe should be a top priority.

“Action now will help cut family stress levels this Christmas.”

Short added that, along with the other measures proposed by the union, the return to schools after Christmas should be staggered.

He said: “Bubbles must come back, and pupils shouldn’t all return at once on the same day in January.”

This came as England’s Chief Medical Officer branded Omicron a “really serious threat”.

Chris Whitty told a press conference on Wednesday: “The how big a threat – there are several things we don’t know, but all the things that we do know are bad.”

UNISON: bunch of sniveling opportunistic cowards. Government should (but won’t) should follow the science (!): no issues for children, teachers no worse than anyone else. So schools remain open with no restrictions. Any teacher who refuses to work is in breach of contract and is fired. Maybe there will be a strike, but it cannot be any worse than it already is.

TBH, I detested Thatcher, but we really could do with someone like her to destroy these unions.

Well I am no fan of how UNISON or most/all other unions I know about here and elsewhere have responded to covid, but it’s the same response as virtually every other institution that has either just rolled over or actively used covid to their own advantage. Ultimately the government’s Big Lie that covid is exceptional leaves the door open to this kind of thing, which is probably the intention.

Yes exactly so. The real fault lies with the government that wants as much disruption as it can get away with and Unison is very happy to oblige.

Rick, this situation is of vastly more importance than our petty political differences. We are a minority, and we need to stick together.

Goverments set people against eachother – so they don’t have to get their hands dirty. Let’s become immune to that.

Obviously, we all have diverse political/religious/belief make-ups, and this will bleed through, but what is the most important issue right now?

I watched a clip of Marr interviewing Dave Gilmour a few months back, and Marr asked him about that song, and if he still stood behind the lyrics now. Gilmore immediately caved and said oh.. no no no..

I’m afraid Dave Gilmore is no Roger Waters, who not only wrote the song but actually has a backbone. He’ll speak his mind about taboo subjects like the treatment of the Palestinians, whereas Gilmore is luxuriating in a comfortable liberal middle-class retirement, rubbing shoulders with the arseholes who are oppressing us..

Aren’t the schools closing this week for Christmas.

Also I was talking to a friend who’s highish up in a charitable voluntary NGO and he said a couple of weeks ago that they have been contacted to arrange volunteers for “testing” from 4th Jan as it’s unlikely children will be “tested” over the Christmas holidays so there will need to be mass testing of children from the 4th Jan.

Nice to see that the scheduled plan is being followed.

he said (…) as it’s unlikely children will be ‘tested’ over the Christmas holidays so there will need to be mass testing of children from the 4th Jan.

There’s a hidden premise somewhere there.
I’ve heard the rumour that a lockdown is planned starting 3 Jan.
This could be combined with keeping schools open for spiked children – or opening them FOR the mass spiking of children, and then perhaps soon closing them.

JERUSALEM, Nov 11 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and senior aides holed up in a nuclear command bunker on Thursday to simulate an outbreak of a vaccine-resistant COVID-19 variant to which children are vulnerable, describing such an eventuality as “the next war“.

Israel would brief foreign leaders next week on the findings of the drill, he said, citing Britain’s Boris Johnson as among counterparts with whom he is in contact.

(…)

“Unlike a war-wargame, a pandemic wargame is not secret. Quite the contrary, we want to share the information,” he said. [Emphasis added.]

There was a comment from the CDC back in July this year that it appears a bunch of people latched onto and then Facebook and a load of others have essentially discredited. Specifically the comment was,

CDC encourages laboratories to consider adoption of a multiplexed method that can facilitate detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses.”

I’m not entirely sure how to read into that but I can understand the initial reaction from the people that jumped onto this. The link to where this is on the CDC site is below:

Probably repeating myself but I was chatting with a guy the other day who was explaining how he’d been lay up in bed for a couple of weeks. Took numerous lateral flow tests along with two negative PCR’s. Eventually his doctor told him he had flu but at the same time as COVID. While that suggests it does differentiate between flu and COVID, it also suggests some fuckery going on in COVID reporting……but then there always has been from day 1!

It’s rather difficult for anyone to be really sick with two viral infections at the same time.
This though is evidenced base medicine – which has been trashed. So it must have been wrong.
Obviously.
Lol.

It took Lindeman and Isaacs about 15 years to isolate the miracle substance which stopped one being infected with two viral infections at the same time – something interfered with this, so, they called them, drum roll, – Interferons!

Big pharma was in like a flash – the new holy grail – just give it to everyone so they don’t get sick at all. Ever.
But, it err, killed a few people so they had to stop – but that was then.

As of 2018 I think 19 have been discovered, and our Great Scientists haven’t got a clue as to how they really work.

Is this saying while the PCR can be specific in what it’s looking for ( even if it can’t be sure somebody is infected ), the LFT could potentially be picking up other coronaviruses, or possibly even flu?

twinkytwonk

Reply to  PoshPanic

They have tested it against those viruses and got a negative result. However, they are looking for a nucleotide sequence that is between 60 and 100 nucleotides in length in a mass of RNA from every animal, bacteria, virus and fungi .it is estimated that there are 200,000 viruses in the sea alone so it’s guaranteed that no primer or probe used in PCR is 100% specific

Documents I have seen suggests that 3 code sequences – start, end and middle metaphorically – are used to identify SARS-CoV-2. There have been reports that moronic matches only 2 (which 2 is left unspecified, all other variants have matched 3 by implication), so that suggests moronic isn’t SARS-CoV-2?

Have you any further info on this?

The following is an entirely unproven speculation: Historically, trade union used to be somewhat shady organizations with their top brass usually having links to organized crime. Has this ever changed? And considering that the way to get these people moving is to give them money, has the unfaltering commitment of the major UK unions to the Chinese elimination strategy no matter how ridicolousy it turns out to be in practice perhaps something to do with Chinese money? Moreover, is it so unimaginable that they’re inclined to listen to leaders claiming to be communists, especially if these also offer a monetary reward for that?

Some countries are now employing night curfews on bars and restaurants. Some countries have shopping in non essential shops only for the vaxxed. Meaning that Covid will not enter those shops.
This one about schools seem to suggest that these buildings are breeding ground after certain hours.

Omicron hasn’t killed as many people as Alec Baldwin, but who in government cares?
