Scotland May Cancel Summer Exams due to Omicron Outbreaks

Summer exams in Scotland may be cancelled for a third successive year as new Government guidance means that entire classes will have to self-isolate if even one case of the Omicron variant is detected. While First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has stressed her commitment to keeping schools open, she admits that there will be a “period of disruption”. The Times has the story.

While Nicola Sturgeon said she would “bust a gut” to keep schools open, leading educationalists warned that the new guidance was likely to be “highly disruptive of children’s education” and would inevitably damage their mental health.

It came as teachers’ unions called for the early closure of schools to “fend off a new wave of infection”.

The First Minister said that there would be a “period of disruption” but insisted that there would be no “blanket” closures of schools.

“Nobody wants that,” she said. “Of course, if there are outbreaks of infections in schools then there needs to be a response to that, but I’m very clear about the importance of minimising the disruption to children’s education.”

She said that under the new guidance “all household contacts of any Covid case should isolate for ten days, regardless of the vaccination status and even if they initially get a negative PCR test”.

The new variant, added Jason Leitch, the national clinical director, had an “attack rate” of 50%. “If you have a room of 100 people and a single unknown Omicron case is in that room, you could in the days after that, find 50, 60 or 70 positives,” he said.

The scale of the impact on education was laid bare during Sturgeon’s Covid briefing today when she was told that schools in Edinburgh had been advising parents that if one child tested tested positive for Omicron, all their classmates would have to isolate for ten days even if they tested negative,

Earlier this week, a primary school in Paisley closed because of an outbreak of the Omicron variant, and a secondary school in Irvine, Sturgeon’s home town, has reverted to blended learning for the S3 year group, because of “significantly high levels of staff absence”.

The latest advice on isolating would make a “woeful situation even worse”, said Lindsay Paterson, Professor of Educational Policy at the University of Edinburgh. “This new prospective disruption to students’ learning brings into serious doubt the fairness and viability of the exams next May.”

They never learn. Upper respiratory tract diseases are troublesome in winter. Their troublesome nature goes by summer (even if the disease is still around — people just cope better in summer).

But I’m sure it’ll happen again. Over-reaction during the winter spike, they cancel everything they can for the rest of the year, then the disease goes away in spring and we spend months and months trying to cope with the damage caused by all the stuff that isn’t happening even though it could.

“They never learn”

Please for God’s sake stop rationalising their behaviour as incompetence.
It’s fascism by increment, they know exactly what they’re doing.

It seems to me that “they” learned very well. The people’s gullibility and compliance works every time.
A healthy populace and return to normal is not the objective; rather, the opposite.

My God it’s f*ckwitted to assert that not going to school inevitably damages a child’s mental health.

Absolutely a superior education in most cases. It’s a worry though that for many it is school or nothing.

Serious question – how do they know which strain anyone has? It’s my understanding that if you have a positive test and phone the labs and ask which strain you have they will tell you that they don’t test for that so can’t say….

They can ‘have a good guess’ based on how the PCR test works out, and they also fully test a random sample of all PCR tests to identify the specific variant (currently this appears to be done for about 15% of all PCR tests).

Reply to  amanuensis

They will only know for sure by sequencing the PCR product. A few nucleotidetide charges will have little difference on the meltcurve analysis unless there is a big change in the g c content of the sequence ( the reagents bind more strongly to GC rather than a t) .

They are assigning samples that produce no product for the spike protein as Omicron. This is bad science. Anew set of primers / probeNeed to be designed and tested that are specific for this variant. The fact they are doing it this way suggests that they have been unable to design a primer pair that doesn’t have cross reactivity.

It’s just the latest scam to get Omicron ‘cases’ to rise quickly so they can justify more restrictions before Christmas.
No s-gene? must be Omicron…..

It’s all legerdemain, ‘variants’ being sequencing errors based on a mental construct, AKA: in silico genome sequence.

A good guess is not good enough, the science is a joke and this pandemic is a total fraud, even a lay person can see that.

This is very good to understand “the science” underpinning this charade. They are basically relying on the fact that people assume the government does everything properly and is legit, not out to scam them. So the trust is given automatically and this gives the orchestrators a free pass to run rings around the public and tie them up in knots with fake pandemics based on bogus “science”. Hence….trust the science. Thats all they need to hear to be bamboozled and awestruck by these liars.

Why the fuck are people acting like brainless half wits is the bigger question .has it occured to them that they dont have to do any of this multiplied by 60 million but oh we better do what they say or ,erm ,eh, what will they do again ??? Fuck all!!!!! .They are laughing at your cowardice people .You have made it so easy for them, it embarrasing ,even letting your kids have experimental injections(lets not call them vaccines)

At work, smaller christmas parties are currently still going ahead (bet they will be cancelled when it comes to it though), and we have been advised to do an LFT test on the day. People just follow the script every time. I never go to work christmas parties anyway, but if I was minded to go I sure as hell would not be taking one of these tests – I’ve never taken any type of Covid test yet and don’t intend to start now!

And let’s say your “public healthcare” policy has caused such damage to young people via lockdowns and school closures, that you find cancelling exams a neat way of avoiding all the crap results that were about to come in. Problem solved.

The other tried and tested alternative is to fabricate the results (a bit like Ferguson modelling) and dish out gold stars and top grades all round. It doesn’t matter that the pupils haven’t actually learnt anything.

I remember when the Scots were tough and level-headed. Ditto us English. Those days seem like a distant memory. A bygone era. Now we’re a bunch of acquiescent cowards living out the dystopian novels we never thought would become reality. We didn’t even put up a fight.

The problem in Scotland is that the opposition is divided. The SNP are simply the largest (and loudest) minority. Unfortunately, support for nationalism is based on emotion rather than logic, so it doesn’t seem to matter that the so-called ‘Scottish Government’ is a collection of nonentities who would struggle to run a car boot sale.

Got to give Nanny Nippy her due, she is an astute politician. She has her hand out to Westminster, demanding more money to furlough… Which is what she will need to do if she closes schools, because who is going to stay home to look after the weans? No money forthcoming, well that big bad Westminster is at it again not caring about the Scots blah blah blah… Either way she always can take the moral high ground.

Just to add I have it on very good authority that there are kids in Scottish High Schools now who are incontinent. They are literally so scared and traumatised by the last 21 months that they are incontinent! Teachers Unions must know the impact they are having on children’s mental health, it’s evil.

MSM is trying to make fun of people wanting to protect themselves with cheap and proven drugs. Ivermectin has been FDA approved for human use since 1996. It also beats Pfizer’s new wonder drug hands down, and costs next to nothing. Ivermectin doesn’t make tons of money. So they know the Covid shot is on its final gasp, so they take it add something different to it, rebrand under another name and charge 20 times what they would for ivermectin. I cannot wrap my head around this nonsense. When I explain this to my relatives they label me as crazy and ask me if I know better than science. I don’t make up these information out of my ass. All this information is true and proven. For some people it is near impossible for them to wake up. They are comfortable in their clown world life. If you want to get Ivermectin you can visit https://ivmpharmacy.com
