ONS Reported to U.K. Statistics Authority by Former Senior Employee For Misleading Claim That “Risk of Death is 32 Times Higher in the Unvaccinated”

A former senior figure at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has criticised his old employer for breaching the Code of Practice for Statistics over its biased presentation of data relating to the vaccines.

James Wells, a statistician who served as head of the ONS UK trade team until 2019, has written to the UK Statistics Authority objecting to a new report, published November 1st, which leads with the statistic that “the age-adjusted risk of deaths involving coronavirus (COVID-19) was 32 times greater in unvaccinated people than in fully vaccinated individuals”.

However, as James points out, this statistic uses data from January 2nd to September 24th 2021, which includes the bulk of the winter deaths at a time when almost no one was vaccinated. This massively skews the implied vaccine effectiveness, as a fair comparison would only include periods when a significant proportion of the country was vaccinated.

An earlier version of the same report was released in September using data from January 2nd to July 2nd, which I criticised at the time. It made a similarly sensational claim about the high number of deaths in the unvaccinated compared to the vaccinated, garnering headlines that just 1% of deaths in the first six months of 2021 (640 out of over 50,000) were in fully vaccinated people. This was technically true, but completely misleading in terms of what it appeared to tell us about the effectiveness of the vaccines. Neither the ONS nor the journalists reporting on the data took care to make this clear.

In fact, according to PHE data, around 70% of deaths in August were in the double-vaccinated, not 1% – though that by itself is also misleading as an indication of vaccine effectiveness as it takes no account of how many were vaccinated. An estimate of unadjusted vaccine effectiveness (VE) against death from the raw data suggests VE was around 70% in the over-80s in August (dropping to 58% in the most recent report), and around 90% in 30-39 year-olds. This corresponds to more like a two to 10 times higher risk of death in the unvaccinated, not 32 times (though the estimates may need adjusting for biases in the raw data; on the other hand, studies from Israel and Sweden have found similar drops in vaccine effectiveness against death within six months).

The new ONS report stresses that “age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) can be affected by differing characteristics of the population in the vaccination status groups and the changing COVID-19 infection rate”. It therefore warns that “the ASMRs do not show causal links between vaccines and risk of mortality”. However, that note appears halfway through and is unlikely to prevent the misunderstanding of the top-line figure, which is presented as though (and most people will assume) it is telling us something about vaccine effectiveness. After all, why else present mortality risk split by vaccination status? The implication the ONS wants us to draw about the vaccines from its headline statistic is clear, whatever its notes halfway down the page might say.

James Wells is right to object to this misleading presentation of statistics, apparently to serve a Government narrative. Let us hope the criticisms brought by him and others will bring about positive change in how the ONS and other official bodies present Covid statistics.

Funnily enough I was listening to Talkradio this morning (was driving intercity) and the presenter was referencing this report and saying that he’d heard that the risk was “32 times higher for the un-“vaccinated”.

These lies have an impact that is never fully rolled back when they are uncovered.

The ONS has been systematically dishonest in pushing covid panic and pro-“vaccine” bullshit, and heads should roll there. Its only reason for existence is to be honest. If it can’t manage that then either it needs to be abolished or its senior staff must be replaced wholesale by individuals with a greater commitment to truth than to political correctness.

Just found the clip I remembered – it was Ian Collins.

https://youtu.be/SMH19hGhc0Y?t=3022

He had previously referenced it when in discussion with a stunningly stupid former Tory MP and now hospital doctor Tania Mathias, who seems utterly terrified of the jumped up cold and thinks it’s some kind of unprecedentedly dangerous and “top of the top”, “clever” new kind of disease, rather than just the fifth coronavirus cold to affect humanity, so dangerous that most people who get it either feel nothing or have cold symptoms.

She’s so stupid, she thinks that the response to having it pointed out to her that the vast majority of people don’t die from the disease is to say “but some do”. Well in that case, if some do, let’s just forget about the actual statistics then and hide under our beds, eh, Mathias?

That is the level of sheer panic stupidity – in medically qualified people, for goodness’ sake! – that gave rise to what we have experienced over the past couple of years.

I heard this too, and couldn’t believe that anyone so stupid managed to get to be a doctor and then an MP.
God help us all if our lives are in the hands of pillocks like this.

Even the speaker she was pitted against went through the obligatory vaccine-push throat- clearing. Is this a pre condition for being allowed on the airwaves?

I think TalkRadio had their cautionary suspension a while back, and are very careful not to push the truth envelope too far.

I would go so far as to say that all the deaths in 2020 were to unvaccinated people and zero for vaccinated. That proves the effectiveness of the vaccine beyond doubt

Indeed, that is pushing the envelope of the fraudulent use of statistics that the ONS have done to its limit. This application of the same methodology to 2020 (there were some vaccinations in December) is the type of reductio ad absurdum that is needed to show how even the ONS, who should know better, are now simply a propaganda tool.

What the ONS have done here is utterly shameful. To think that the UKHSA was expected (bullied, actually) to add all manner of caveats to its rates so that no one might draw a comparison in respect of vaccine effectiveness, and then for the ONS to tell such a whopper as this, which is a foul use of statistics and method, shows that all sense of fairness and propriety has departed from them.

Shame on the ONS.

It seems not too much to ask that a statistical authority be statistically-literate.

and of course no mention of how many of the “unvaccinated” had actually had (and likely died from) their first shot.

Having a two shot series of injections was a clever way of disgusing lots of vaccine deaths and injuries.
Ifthe first one killed you or clearly injured you then you simply go down on the stats as unvaccinated at the time of the incident.

It’s amazing how desperate the cult members are to support the narrative, regardless of facts and data lol.

The Absolute Risk Reduction is where it’s at folks and once you get below 60 it becomes slightly inconvenient for the true believers.

No need to look at facts objectively though when you’ve already took your two (three?) jabs is there ????

ARR and RRR is central to a lot of the problems we have right now. I think Pfizer ARR is around 0.84%.

However, as James points out, this statistic uses data from January 2nd to September 24th 2021, which includes the bulk of the winter deaths at a time when almost no one was vaccinated.

James must surely know, that when it comes to Sars-2, the British Government’s policy is based on a “Lie Early and Often” approach.

So an “official” UK body the ONS has been reported to another official UK body the UK Statistics Authority, that’ll go well. Not.

No. ‘Statistics’ is the method for uncovering data fraud and allowing transparency. It’s the application of statistical analysis that has highlighted this breach.

The generalized dissing of ‘statistics’ is actually a key tool of the fraudsters. It undermines the platform of proper analysis. Don’t fall for it. The alternative is ‘common sense’ – i.e. ‘prejudiced bollocks’

we need to start showing our opposition. The “10% Rule” shows that when the herd see determined opposition from at least 10% of the population they will change their minds. We are more than 10%. We have to show ourselves. Here’s how: https://paul007edwards.wixsite.com/home/post/influencing-people-on-the-street

… and this doesn’t cover the additional error of quoting only relative risk between two very low frequency events.

I think that the subversion of the ONS is incredibly sad and concerning. At the beginning, it was a remaining beacon of light – until was co-opted to the cause.

There is an ivermectin panic on the big tech and MSM right now. Massive articles from MSM on Ivermectin trying to push a danger narrative and also negative press on Americans Frontline Dr’s, again, to keep the Covid narrative alive. Just go to the Goog and type ivermectin then look at all the panic news articles. We are over the target. Big-Pharma is panicking. This medicine has been widely used by humans without any problems for 40 years. It’s inventor won a Nobel Prize after 20 years of successful use and after 100 million people were cured of a broad spectrum of problems without any side effects.
