Djokovic’s Vaccine Stance May Cost Him Entry to the Australian Open
We’re publishing a guest post today by David Hansard, a writer who has previous contributed to Quillette, the Conservative Woman and Cumbria magazine. It’s about the principled refusal of Novak Djokovic to refuse to disclose his vaccine status and the risks he’s taking in doing so.
Daniel Andrews, the self-satisfied Premier of Victoria, has said it is doubtful unvaccinated tennis players will be allowed to take part in the Australian Open in January.
Few are surprised by what Andrews said. It is entirely in keeping with his authoritarian response to Covid, which seems to get more dictatorial by the day. He is not alone among politicians. But like others in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere, his policies seem to be reaching new heights of illiberalism.
Nine-times Australian Open winner, and world number one, Novak Djokovic, in particular, is not happy.
Djokovic first made his views about vaccinations known some months ago. He believes it should be a personal choice free of any pressure, let alone mandated. Last week, when asked, he refused to say if he has been vaccinated. He added: “It is a private matter and an inappropriate inquiry. People go too far these days in taking the liberty to ask questions and judge a person.”
I think it safe to say he has not been vaccinated.
Many sceptics are understandably pleased, and feel encouraged by Djokovic’s stance. It is not every day you find one of the world’s leading sports men on your side. It is a breath of fresh air after months of politicians and the media relentlessly urging everyone to be vaccinated, masked, distanced and tested, while those who express concern are often dismissed, demonised or censored.
But sceptics need to be cautious. Andrews’ statement puts Djokovic in a more difficult position than it might at first appear. Doubtless, Djokovic knows this himself.
One argument in support of Djokovic is simple but powerful: elite tennis players are some of the fittest people who have ever lived. They are at a diminishingly small risk from serious illness from Covid, let alone from dying of it. And at the highest level of the game, those who win and win regularly, do so by a very narrow margin. It is this small but vital difference between players’ performances which separates the very good from the exceptionally good, from the winners and legends.
It is to be expected, therefore, that Djokovic is uneasy. Other players and coaches agree, but have received less publicity. Pat Cash, for example, has voiced dismay about vaccinations and about the restrictions, bubbles and testing faced by players on tour. And one unnamed female player, Cash said, had a blood clot after being vaccinated.
In April, Djokovic said: “My issue here with vaccines is if someone is forcing me to put something in my body. That I don’t want.” For Djokovic, and for all top players, it is not just training and perfecting their skills which matters. They follow what we might call a ‘whole body’ approach. Close attention is paid to diet, to improve and safeguard fitness, strength and stamina. But perhaps most of all to gain the extra advantage which helps players win grand slams. Why add the worry that it all may be put at risk, especially by a new and previously unproven vaccine, and one they don’t need?
If only it were that simple. Djokovic also has to consider his public image. Sponsors may be nervous, as will be the ATP, the governing body of men’s professional tennis. The ATP, and in women’s tennis the WTA, are emphasising the benefits of vaccination and attempting to reassure players. As with so many organisations, companies and governments, they fear damage to their reputation, even if what they are doing sometimes defies logic.
Along with the claim that being vaccinated reduces transmission, all this makes it far from straightforward for the world number one.
Djokovic has said he is unsure if he will play at the Australian Open. He knows his words carry some weight and will be hoping in this case that he can change minds. For now, it is perhaps the best – and only – tactic he has at his disposal, if he is to give himself a chance to win a tenth Australian Open without being vaccinated.
Stop Press: A leaked email from the Women’s Tennis Association suggests unvaccinated players may be able to compete at the Australian Open provided they quarantine for two weeks on arrival. The Mirror has more.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
The tournament will lose more from his absence than he will.
Stick to your guns, lad.
The daft thing is that he has natural immunity because he caught COVID last year (I think), so he’s better protected than those who are vaccinated against it.
Funny how those in that position aren’t being recognised as essentially in a very similar position – probably better – due to the immunity not waning (or as quickly).
The Covid “vaccines” are clearly nothing to do with safeguarding people from Covid-19, whatever that really is. Nothing about these “vaccination” programs make any sense, unless it is assumed that the “vaccines” are meant to be dangerous. On that basis all of the inconsistencies and illogicalities will fit firmly into place.
People need to ask themselves, just why they are agreeing to be injected with dubious biological agents, that are being backed by Bill Gates, whose oft stated aim is to depopulate the planet and using “vaccines” to do it.
We have two very dear, unvaccinated friends who have been hospitalised and are struggling with a form of this disease. I say ‘a form’ because none of us know what it is. The hospital says it’s covid but covid has never been isolated. Their grown up son is double vaccinated. He was very sick but recovered. He came to visit his parents and within three days they were both knocked for six. They have never been so ill. They are in their early 60s and very healthy with no underlying problems.
Strangely, the rest of the family who were at the gathering are also all in bed with varying states of illness. None of them were vaccinated and none were sick until the jabbed family member arrived. Those who have not succumbed couldn’t make the family reunion. We have since heard a number of similar stories where the vaccinated are causing illness to other non jabbed family members. I now strongly believe in shedding. The evidence is becoming too strong.

HOLD THE LINE Novak. Tell Supreme Leader Daniel Andrews to f*ck off!
Yes, balls to him!
Despot Dan.
Andrews is nothing more than an oafish middle manager or regional sales rep driving a Mondeo in a cheap suit that’s drunk on power. There’s definitely some seedy shit this guy is guilty of which will come out eventually.
Hopefully, something worse happens to him before then.
He’s already a champion for freedom, they are freaks trying to inject everyone, for a low mortality ‘virus’.
There’s a witch hunt in Germany at the moment, for unvaxxed footballer Joshua Kimmich.
Novak should just do his own tournament with a few mates, other unvaxxed players and those vaxxed players with a still intact moral compass.
That would turn the OZ Open into a well deserved farce, similar to Wimbledon in the mid 60s and could really bring about change.
Regardless of whether they are jabbed or not, the top tennis players should rally around Djokovic and boycott the Australian Open as a protest against discrimination. They don’t have to be against the jabs, just against discrimination.
It would be a powerful message to the world.
should help fully jabbed Murray if the good players get disqualified
If he stands his ground and doesn’t give in, he’s already won. He’s a hero. That win will NEVER be forgotten!
I admire the man enormously.
Difficult for him to know what to do.
On the one hand, does he “comply” and win – and then tell them to F*ck Off, or, does he simply refuse to go – and tell them to “F*ck off anyway.
Maybe do the latter in the hope it may make some sheep awake.
The trouble is – Oz is after all a penal colony and is well used to being locked up, so they’ll barely notice one way or another…
I don’t think it’s a difficult decision at all – if he has a serious adverse reaction he endangers his life. Even if it doesn’t endanger his life in the short term, if he has a reaction like Jeremy Chardy’s, he’ll never win another tournament!
Djokovic is taking a principled stand: it’s nobody’s business; he won’t be coerced; the shots are immorally developed and tested; they threaten one’s health; they’re a means to an end of totalitarian control.
He is in a position to broadcast these objections far and wide. I hope he uses it.
The world seems to be turning into a Covid Cult run by extremists. Covid is the means to an end which is Segregation passports, which in the UK is instigated by Blair and his Blairites. They have persuaded the cult members that having an app will keep them safe, like a science fiction story
Bless him .. pray he stands his ground .. apart from the obvious freedom of choice issue it’s nobody’s business as to what medical treatment he has or hasn’t had.
I only wish enough would join him to make the tournament a farce.
The tournament will be a farce without him – although whether those players with dollar signs in their eyes will recognize it, is another matter.
There’s no sporting guts in being a creepy wimp.
It actually won’t take that many.. yes there are a couple of very capable players certainly coming through now – Zverev, Medvedev, but if another one or two of the World’s top 5 is absent, it will really have monumental impact on the shape of the tournament.
These sports stars have significant influence on the youngsters and must have the courage to speak out and stand firm. Another big sporting name, the undefeated boxing great Floyd Mayweather has thrown his support behind the basketball player Kyrie Irving who has been suspended by his club for refusing to have the vaccine. This can only do good.

Nothing to do with tennis, but this made my blood boil, had to post it;
Hillary Clinton Calls For Vaccine Mandate….In The UK
She is a piece of work
Shame she couldn’t call for reinforcements in Benghazi.
This wins the internet for the week!
My respect for Djokovic has risen immensely.
My medical history is my own f*cking business. Not yours or anybody else’s. What a change from the usual bland, anodyne, line toeing pronouncements from most sportsmen.
With Quinton de Kock refusing to be browbeaten by Cricket South Africa’s directive to ‘take the knee’, it’s refreshing to see some backbone.
That’s the point we don’t know he is ‘vaccinated’ he’s right it’s nobody’s business including us – though the encouragement for standing his ground being expressed is worthy of the man. If he is not allowed to compete whoever wins the tournament will always know what a hollow victory Dan Andrews has handed them.
“I think it safe to say he has not been vaccinated.”
I disagree. It’s none of your business, my business, nor anybody else’s business whether he is vaccinated or not. End of story.
Funny innit, all the things being conveniently ignored:
1) He already has natural immunity.
2) He is at the peak of his earning power and does not wish to impair his potential to win.
3) He has a whole team of medical specialists whose sole responsibility is to keep him at peak fitness who- lo and behold evidently do not recommend the vaxx for him.
Latest news is that ‘a way may be found’…
Victorian Sports and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula has responded after a leaked email to WTA players claimed unvaccinated tennis stars would be allowed to compete at the Australian Open after completing 14 days of hotel quarantine Down Under.
Ash Barty is also quoted toward the end of the article, saying she was vexxed but doesn’t need to know about anyone else’s vax status.
If forced to quarantine, a real man would decline. Enough of these lies and controls!
I find it a bit sad that anyone would want to go there. Also, we know to the extent that it is verifiable Djokovic had the disease last year. So, any rational medical advice would be that he should not have it.
I wish these unvaccinated athletes would give the reasons they have chosen not to get vaccinated. These reasons are numerous and persuasive. If they did give these reasons, who knows, a few journalists might run their quotes, thereby educating some of the many readers who can’t think of one plausible reason.
This whole thing can only be understood as a psychological delusion, group think or a so called “mass formation”. No other explanation makes sense. I am double vaccinated. Not out of a belief that they protect me or others but out of a sense that vaccination was a way out of this. That was clearly an error of judgment. No one has managed to give a rationale for boosters other than comments about declining vaccine efficacy requiring “boosting”. I struggle to understand why this may be the case. It feels like yet another knee jerk reaction with no real basis in reality. Increasingly, I think that claims of vaccine efficacy even at preventing severe illness are based on distorted data, diagnostic subjectivity and undercounting adverse vaccine effects. I have made these points in other posts. The ease with which nearly everyone seemingly ascribes lower Covid death rates now to the great vaccines rather than the equally plausible explanation of greater herd immunity and waning virus potency is mind boggling. My own intellectual journey this past 18 months has led me more fundamentally to reject most medical orthodoxy. Having read various books on the topic I believe more and more that… Read more »
Why would any educated or for that matter, uneducated person believe a piece of paper with your health record could stop transmission of the invisible virus?
Most vaxxed are completely aware they can contract and transmit Covid. Everyone we know over the past few months with Covid…..are all double vaxxed and can’t wait to get their third ineffective dose of what? Who knows there seems to be a lot of discussion about what us actually in this jab. Some of it does not sound so good.
perhaps someone could let those waiting for their third dose know, it is the same concoction as the first two. It does not work against the delta variant. By all means take the koolaid, but you will probably have a better chance of fighting a cold virus, with the usual supplements, healthy eating, weight maintenance and exercise and a good night’s sleep. Dr. Zev Zelenko’s protocol quite useful.
This article misses the point completely. It concentrates on importance of a career, sponsorship and high level status. However, the really important issue is morality, freedom of choice and spiritual health. Anyone who takes and encourages others to take a vaccine just to keep their career and their salary is not worthy of being in the winners circle. Those who are allowed to carry on playing because they have followed a dictatorial mantra will never know if their wins are due to their skill or the lack of the truly skilled competing. Where on earth has our spirituality and service to each other disappeared. How easy it is for money to dictate our moral compass.
Djokovic, hero!
One simple question needs addressing and that is how can anyone in their right mind mandate an experimental procedure and which already has a 99.8% survival rate if infected.
At this rate the tennis and other sports will become more like the hunger games, a kinda competition to see who survives to the end without dropping dead from myocarditis, blood clot induced stroke or fiting from guillain barre syndrome.
“Djokovic’s Vaccine Stance May Cost Him Entry to the Australian Open”
I think it is the other way round.
The Australian Authorities stance on Covid vaccines will cost them the appearance of Djokovic.
