When Will Neil Ferguson Admit He Got it Wrong?
We’re publishing another critique today, this one by Glen Bishop, of the new paper in Nature by Neil Ferguson and others claiming that a lockdown in Sweden would have resulted in a two- to four- fold reduction in mortality. Hard to credit they’re still banging this drum, given that Ferguson’s team originally predicted the absence of a lockdown in Sweden would have resulted in up to 90,000 deaths by July 2020. The real number was 5370. When will Ferguson admit he simply got it wrong?
In the latest episode of the Imperial modelling saga, Imperial have dusted off old modelling techniques and cherry picked the time scale and countries in a study to try to disparage the Swedish success, the Achilles heel of the lockdown lobby. In the paper published in Nature, Imperial propose a counterfactual model, whereby the Danish, Swedish and British responses to coronavirus are transposed to the other two countries respectively, to compare the effectiveness of each approach in reducing covid mortality when accounting for the heterogeneities between the countries.
Imperial’s team models the respective change in R value through the first months of the pandemic using the death data from each country. Interestingly, it implies that the R0 value of the virus in March 2020 in the U.K. was around 4.5, far higher than previous estimates of 2.5 to 3. These changes in the R-value are then applied to the other countries. The problem is that the Imperial team then retrospectively model the pandemic for each hypothetical scenario using the same flawed modelling techniques which have consistently been wildly inaccurate. Despite Professor Ferguson misleading Matt Ridley at a select committee hearing to suggest Imperial had not produced estimates for Sweden, his Imperial team had in fact predicted between 30,000 and 42,000 deaths in Sweden with social distancing lockdowns and up to 90,000 deaths by July 2020 if the pandemic was left unmitigated. By July 2020 the actual figure was 5370, an order of magnitude below Imperial’s predictions.
The logic to supporting the lockdowns has thus become cyclical, relying on the modelling that influenced lockdown policies in the first place, with Imperial inevitably concluding the following: “Sweden adopting U.K. policies would have resulted in a two- to four- fold reduction in mortality (Table 1). Had the U.K. adopted Swedish policies, deaths would have increased deaths by a factor of between 1.6 and 4.”
This is naïve and misleading at best. The scenario modelled only runs up to July 2020 and had the U.K. or Sweden suppressed the spread to reduce mortality during that period it would have led to increased mortality in future waves, particularly with the rapidly increasing infectiousness of the variants. Hungary is perhaps the best illustration of this point. It was celebrated last year after suppressing the first wave and experiencing very low mortality, yet went on to have the highest mortality rate in Europe after coronavirus surged the following winter within a population with little natural immunity and at a time when hospitals are under pressure.
The evidence within the paper to support the conclusion – that “small differences in the timing and effectiveness of control strategies have dramatic effects on the resulting numbers of cases and deaths” – relies on the non-existent credibility of the team’s previous attempts to model the pandemic and is easily negated with the reality all over the world. Across the globe, a wide range of interventions have been tried at different times over the past 18 months, with varying levels of severity, but little evidence of an correlation between those variables and different outcomes. We only have to look at the similar outcomes in Peru and Brazil, for example, or Florida and California, to see how different approaches yield the same results in regions with similar populations.
Professor Samir Bhatt, a Professor of Public Health at the University of Copenhagen and a member of the Imperial team that pushed the U.K. into lockdown, even admits: “Many times I would have thought that the situation would have gone a different way, but it worked for Sweden… They achieved infection control; they managed to keep infections relatively low, and they didn’t have any health care collapse.” Yet, as the Telegraph has highlighted, “real benefits of Sweden’s radical policy, however, can be seen in the economy, the psychological impact, and in schools”. The U.K. experienced a 9.8% drop in GDP compared to Sweden’s 2.8%, with Sweden’s economy back at pre-pandemic levels by June 2021 after the fastest economic rebound in Europe. While young people in the U.K. suffered large educational disruption, few Swedish students missed any school.
The paper continues to support lockdowns as if they were a laboratory experiment on rats with no damaging side effects or moral hazards involved. It remains completely blinkered to anything but an obsession with controlling one particular virus, with a reckless disregard for the wider societal consequences of the lockdown policies they advocate. In the ethics declaration on the paper, the Imperial team declare “no competing interests”, yet this is not the case. It is clearly in the interests of the Imperial team to denigrate Sweden’s policy as best they can. If their paper was to conclude anything else, they would have to admit that they have caused enormous damage to society and cost countless excess non-Covid deaths in the UK and around the world because of their advice. It is strongly in the interest of their careers, reputation and standing in society to spin Sweden as a failure in any way they can.

But tis all about computer modelling – don’t you plebs understand that evidence based medicine is dead?
As a software engineer with over four decades of experience in the industry, and with a BA (Hons. 1st Class) and a PhD. in Computer Science, both from Cambridge University, I can assure people that the sort of modelling carried out by Prof. Ferguson and his team at Imperial College, is first-class work.
/S <- bold flashing red 36pt font.
apparently it didn’t even run in a thread safe way and was prone to timing bugs which meant it wasn’t even deterministic!
Why use computer modeling when we have 18 months of mortality data to compare? The proof – and the truth – is contained in this data.
Surely, a modelling outfit concerned will model efficacy would dynamically improve their model by taking into account actually behaved in response to the input, as opposed to the original predictions. This would effectively created a closed loop predictor rather than an open loop one.
In ‘reality’, if the paymaster wants a model that predicts the sun revolves around the earth, then that is what they get from all-too-willing ‘modellers’.
Quite and a few cruise and battle ships where some pretty worse case scenario trials were carried out.
It was written in a version of “S” was it? I didn’t know that…
By the way that was just a joke of course….
Then the technology and/or data is evidentially immature.
It didn’t appear to even converge over time as more results came in.
If Ferguson admits he’s wrong he’ll be throwing his main funder, Bill Gates, under the bus. That’s not going to happen, is it.
He’ll also be implicitly saying the British government and most others got it wrong and lockdowns were a costly mistake.
I doubt he wants to pass all those people off.
On the flipside, if he stands his ground he has some very powerful backing. So he’s golden as he is.
Hopefully he’ll keep digging in…and end up in Australia, where he can reap the rewards of all his hard work.
If Ferguson admits he was wrong and therfore has lied, and repeatedly, Billy Boy will ensure he gets the Magufuli treatment.
It’s that simple.
I wonder how many people fantasise about embedding his skull on one of those hooks on the wall behind him? Is it just me?
Smug cunt!
I like your thinking, but join me in in lobbying for his head on a pikestaff on Tower Bridge. That way it serves as a reminder to the other ‘scientists’.
Can I cut his head off please?
I think we might need a lucky dip to see who has that privilege.
That almost seems too good/easy for him, he needs to suffer a lot first.
The rest of his team could have their heads on pikestaffs in other large cities in the rest of the U.K.
Once you include the likes of Whitty, Valance, Devi Sridhar, Susan Mitchie, etc. etc. most medium sized towns are likely to get at least one head.
Cut his head off starting at the feet
It’s not just you.
Seriously, how is this guy getting away with this? How has he not been arrested for treason? Why is there no mechanism in our society to shut him down and close him out? You can’t just walk around spouting absolute bollocks like this, affecting people’s lives in a massive way, over a period of decades, with immunity! You can’t yell fire in a crowded theatre, and that’s exactly what this doofus has been doing. I’m serious, I want his head on a pikestaff on Tower Bridge. If that’s an arrestable offence, come get me in your gay clown cop cars. This is insane.
He’s an ” Advisor “. That’s his get our. It’s the massive idiots who keep listening to his advice who are as much, if not more to blame.
True. They must be profoundly stupid if they haven’t yet twigged that Ferguson is an arse.
Every other powerful institution, private and public, in the land and the rest of world, give or take a few, is in this up to their necks.
Apparently you can. I suppose not having morals, honour, integrity or a conscience helps.
Neil Fergussens’s predictions were totally accurate and had their intended consequence of scaring the world to death. It’s the virus that failed to do what Gates et al. intended it to do.
I reckon Alex Ferguson or Massey Ferguson would have done a better job than Neil Ferguson!
A Massey Ferguson – with appropriate attachments, might be the best way to deal with Neil Ferguson.
When Will Neil Ferguson Admit He Got it Wrong?
He doesn’t ever have to… he’s laughing all the way to the bank…. he’s set for life.
It’s all part of the GREAT RESET PLAN….
He didn’t get it wrong. He deliberately produced propaganda. And he hasn’t finished.
Young Neil (the odious and narcissistic twat that he is) doesnt escape from the headmasters office – and run screaming to the Gates, and start shouting out computer codes and modelling permutations, to anyone who’ll listen. He’s paid by the Headmaster and the billion dollar corporates, to do so !! God bless him.
The only argument that can be made against the “placebo” case study of Sweden is that this nation has had a fairly large number of deaths for a nation its size (10.2 million people). Last I checked, this mortality figure was more than 14,000. However, even a cursory glance at who actually died from or with COVID shows that this critique is spurious or misleading. I don’t have the stats at my fingertips but if memory serves, the average age of a COVID victim in Sweden is 82 – which is at least 3 years older than the typical life expectancy in the US. Approximately 80 percent (maybe more) of deaths in Sweden occurred among its population over the age of 70. Nearly 20 percent of deaths in Sweden occurred among the population 90 and older! In the entire nation of Sweden fewer than 100 people under the age of 40 have died of COVID. I’m still not sure if any school-aged child (5 to 18) has died of COVID in Sweden. If there were a few deaths in this age bracket, I’d bet almost all of this tiny number occurred among children with severe pre-existing or “life-altering” conditions. And… Read more »
>the Delta Variant has been almost a non-event in Sweden.
Perhaps because those 0-60s Swedes self-immunised by catching SARS2 and thus Sweden now has a much lower potential for spreading breakouts than the nations that relied on the risky jabs.
Sweden us running about 1K “cases” a day, which (if testing levels are similar) would be about 7K a day for the UK population. That is definitely a lot better, also their curve is much lower than the winter wave; Croatia which also gave up on lockdowns is looking similar. Interesting to compare with the UK and for example France, where the delta wave is similar magnitude to the winter wave.
So, could well be that they had much better natural immunity before delta arrived than other locked down countries.
There is absolutely no way that Sweden had 14,000 “Covid deaths.”
A reasonable expectation of normal total mortality in Sweden would have been 92,000 deaths, in keeping with the pattern of the last ten years or so. In the event there were 97,000 deaths last year, and Anders Tegnell admitted that errors had been made with regard to the protection of care home residents, which he took responsibility for and corrected.
So about 5,000 deaths over normal patterns last year. Mortality this year is exactly in line with normal patterns. Bluntly, no one is “dying of covid” in Sweden.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/525353/sweden-number-of-deaths/
if memory serves, ivor cummings also showed that Sweden had a lot of ‘dry tinder’ due to unusually low flu mortality in the prior year, further amplfying the expected deaths number for 2020
Yes, 2019 was a freakishly low mortality year in Sweden, the lowest in raw numbers of the entire decade and IIRC the lowest age and population adjusted figure since the 1970s.
I can’t remember the exact name of the procedure, but it has something to do with prostate cancer. In Sweden the procedure was performed 2% less in 2020, in the UK it was performed 46% less…
I suppose this means that Sweden may put in an extradition request as he has surely broken their laws. Maybe defamation of Anders Tegnell, maybe trying to spread anxiety.
When Will Chicken Little Admit Sky is not falling?
He looks like he’s got a new career, modelling jumpers
I thought he was jumping modellers a while back in spite of ‘The Rules’
Humping, not jumping.
His jumper is as tasteless and outdated as he is
And his stupid models
Ferguson is employed to do what he does. He is not wrong as far as his employer goes. That employer has sufficient clout to keep him in place irrespective of what happens.
There is a carefully planned structure in place to prevent anyone taking the blame, or facing the consequences. Ferguson etc on NERVTAG provides (unknown) information to SAGE. SAGE provides (unknown) information to HMG. HMG provides public BS to the masses. The NERVTAG group minutes from late 2020 show they started preparing their data for an expected inquiry. A little bit of nuance found here, and a little bit there, and hey presto – it wasn’t me gov.
Ferguson was also on SAGE until he was caught breaking ‘The Rules’. His punishment was removal from SAGE. That ‘punishment’ has helped increase the separation between his inputs and the government output, and will be very beneficial when pass-the-parcel time comes around.
And he was carefully picked to produce models that are intuitively stupid, reckless and wildly inaccurate, because TPTB want us to know they are pissing themselves laughing at us plebs. They want us to know how stupid and malleable they think we are. Unfortunately they are right as far as large swathes of the population are concerned.

It’s the same with mask studies: in theory and in the lab, you can come up with anything.
In the real world, people are pigs.
With regard to the Swedish situation again, in the real world, they had neither the legal basis in place to close borders and lockdown, nor would it have made sense and be comparable with DK/N, as the ski holidays in Stockholm were the earliest of them all and the virus thereby got imported from Ischgl&co and circulated there heavily already.
Also in contrast to the Skane region, which had even lower case and death numbers than neighbouring Copenhagen in 2020.
All this is well known and should be known by Ferguson as well.
So he is either even more stupid than we assumed so far, or even more desperate, corrupt and evil.
Take your pick.

Modelling after the event is no better than telling somebody that if they’d bought shares in company x when they were at rock bottom they could have made a lot of money when the shares went up.
Please stop showing that picture of him. I can’t stand the sight of it. Posing in his figure hugging colour coordinated top in the dappled sunlight… Vain c**t.
He’s a tosser of the highest order.
I detest Ferguson with every fibre of my being. I still don’t understand the Rasputin like hold he has over Johnson and why the media continue to provide an uncritical platform for his bullshit.
Quite apart from being a shameless huckster, he lost any moral authority when he decided that the lockdowns for which he fomented didn’t apply to him when he wanted to shag his Mistress.
‘We didn’t think we would get away with it…..and then we realised, we could’. Words that should live in infamy. Get away with it…despicable.
We must never forgive and never forget. His ludicrously inaccurate models must never again poison the well of our lives.
He has gained hugely from his apocalyptic predictions, the more astronomically inaccurate they have been, the better it has been for him.
He will admit error when the Jimi Hendrix Experience co-headline with Motorhead.
The accompanying question, though, is a much bigger one:
When will Britain finally admit that an overmighty public sector and state run health service is a recipe for disaster?
The bovine idiocy, hopelessly incompetent, indeed lethal, response, of the British state to covid 19 was readily apparent to all very quickly:

There is another way:
‘Universal Healthcare Without The NHS’

You know the Scottish public inquiry opening in December 2021 into the British Government response to covid 19 will savage the reputation of Mr Johnson and his government.
And you know the answers on offer so far do not stand forensic scrutiny…….
This is going to get very interesting….but, like everything state run, not very quickly……
He will never admit to ‘getting it wrong’ – this will be his downfall. He needs locking up. Please support: COVID19 Assembly take legal action against MHRA to halt child vaccinations – https://www.LCAHub.org/
Not until the 12th of Never …… and that’s a long, long time.
While we know he is a complete “dickhead” it’s the empty headed blond one and his cohort who are controlling us and ruining our lives. You know who I mean, our so called “public servants”.
They are the ones we need to go after.
Are they the ‘public servants’ who take every opportunity to self isolate on their full, tax payer funded, salaries so they avoid doing the jobs we pay them to do? Such as seeing patients, teaching children, issuing passports, renewing driving licences etc etc? Perhaps it’s just an amazing coincidence but all these lazy scum bags have one thing in common, they’re all union members.
Pity someone wouldn’t take him out. And I don’t mean to dinner…..
He never got anything wrong. His Job llike all at SPIB & SAGE was not to tell the truth but to lie through their Aristotle’s to scare the 541t out of the public.
Based on the level of brainwashing I would say job well done arggggghhhhhh!
He’s Blair’s goto, has been since they did the same thing with F&M and succeeded to coerce and ruin farming, lot of similarities from the same enemies of the people.
Here’s an idea: Why don’t they calibrate their model by post-dicting the actual result in Sweden? Maybe then they’ll be able to make better predictions in the future.
