Australia’s Capital Entering Seven-Day Lockdown Following One Positive Covid Test
Canberra, the capital of Australia, is being plunged into lockdown for a whole week following the reporting of a single positive Covid test. Retail and hospitality venues will be closed, again, and residents will not be able to leave their homes for ‘non-essential’ reasons past 5pm. The Independent has the story.
Canberra joins Sydney, Melbourne and several cities in New South Wales state that are locked down due to the Delta variant.
Canberra residents can only leave home for essential reasons from 5pm on Thursday, general retail stores will be closed and hospitality venues will only to able to sell takeout, an Australian Capital Territory Government statement said.
Schools will be open to students who cannot stay at home.
The infection is the first locally-acquired case in the city of 460,000 since July 10th last year.
A Canberra resident, a man aged in his 20s, had been infectious in Canberra since Sunday and tested positive on Thursday, Australian Capital Territory Chief Health Officer Kerryn Coleman said.
The source of the infection was unknown, she said. Covid was detected in wastewater late Wednesday, she said.
The lockdown starts on the final day of a two-week sitting of the Federal Parliament.

Overall, has the UK’s reaction been less mad or less evil?
Vaccinating kids?
Feel sorry for the Aussies but we’ve massive problems of our own.
It clearly isn’t anything to do with a virus. But some of us new that well over a year ago.
I’m still hanging onto incompetence (in advise and response) and fear than some big plan. Mainly because I don’t want to believe the rich would even contemplate that – the consequences of that far outstrip what’s happened so far. But I may be naive…
It’s been less mad, yes, in the same way that getting mauled to death by a tiger is slightly better than getting mauled to death by a bear.
I shall take your word for that!
One…. One “case”… You have got to be joking.
This is us in a years time.
One claimed positive test result, not one case.
Ohh the Twitter posts on this have been off the scale. On person tried to say it wasn’t madness (Julie B twee response) and was shouted down in a sea of ‘are you serious’
There are very stupid people who allow oyher stupid people to have power over them.
Sadly, yes, in virtually all of the West.
Is no one asking themselves WHERE did that one person got the virus?
Presumably, it spontaneously manifested itself due to spiritual uncleanliness, eg, maybe, a friend of the guy once knew someone who had a relative whose in-laws were suspected of vaccine hesitancy and other heresies.
The usual stuff.
🙂
If only one person in 460k gets it could it have been shed from a vaxxed person?
Very likely.
I think the point they are making is actually there are at least TWO cases. Although I get they could have caught it from a kangaroo?
Ah! Ok! Two cases! That totally justifies the lockdown, then!
(I know that’s not what you’re saying, just trying to make light of what is an idiotic situation)
Perhaps it was a single virus that came about via something akin to the Immaculate Conception. Like what happened in Bethlehem all that time ago. I would say this is likelier than the more mundane route whereby 2 viruses kind of get it on and have lots of little viruses together and infect happily ever after. I think the science will bear me out on this.
There’s nothing more that one can say.
Well at least my MP has snapped out of it.
“I am deeply uncomfortable with the idea of requiring someone to be vaccinated in order to do their job or play a full part in society. Similarly, making vaccine passports compulsory for entry to nightclubs, bars, sporting events, or university lecture theatres is not something that I would be able to support.”
“Any further changes to make vaccination or vaccine passports compulsory would require legislation to be put before Parliament. This has not yet happened and so I do not yet know the details, however I would not be able to support any measure that did not make allowances for an individual’s right to choose whether or not to be vaccinated against coronavirus or any other disease.”
There is some hope after all.
I think they are now on the point of concentrating on the climate ‘crisis’ as a means of control and are thus now almost ready to stop the covid ‘crisis’.
Funny how “covid” helped them with what they’ve been trying to ram through for decades under the guise of global cooling/warming/climate change, etc.
It seems like the elites would win every single lottery they would participate in, they just always seem to get exactly what they want anytime there is some sort of crisis.
About the only positive (aside from people knowing how to unmute) is that flexible working from home may reduce burning of precious petrochemicals. Nowt to do with climate change but one we do know for certain is that it’s a finite resource and we need to stop wasting it. Surely that is common sense?
Interested to know who your MP is, whether he/she (or any other preferred pronoun) is already a known rebel (whatever the party) or someone thus moving in the right direction?
My MP goes with the flow. He’s known for it. He had the vaccine after recovering from a fairly mild dose of covid and became very ill. It was entirely self-inflicted, I told him, so no sympathy from me. He was, of course, just virtue-signalling, like Boris, to make the population ignorant about the greater benefits of naturally-acquired immunity. How much he’s compromised his immune system with this vaccine only time will tell.
Yeah right, you think democracy still functions? Get real, bro.
There’s some hope, but I do have to point out that he or she or zhe is incorrect. The Johnson regime is getting diktats rubberstamped by this Potemkin Parliament for appearance’s sake, not because they have to.
If they think they’ll lose a vote on the Social Credit Score apps, they simply won’t have one. Bear in mind that they have already been imposed, as “trials”, and they can continue with that fiction as they extend them out from nightclubs and stadia.
Notionally, they “have” to then get the nod for their tyranny after the fact, but I’m not aware of them ever having done so.
My MP is very woolly on all this:
“Introducing vaccine passports as a way of coercing younger people to get the vaccine would be inappropriate. We do need to increase uptake in some age groups, however this should be through positive encouragement and education, not through restrictions.
The Government has taken the right decision to trust people’s judgment since the 19th of July, and has made no decision on vaccine passports. We do still need to take precautions as cases are alarmingly high, however the success of the vaccines means mortality rates are now broadly in line with endemic viruses such as the flu. We should be planning ahead to how we can end measures in September once this wave is over, not ramping them up.
I can assure you I have already made this point to ministers and will continue to do so.”
Talk about sitting on the fence, blowing in the wind and sailing with the tide. Aren’t MPs suppose to defend our freedoms and LEAD??
So the whole city gets locked down. The craziest part isn’t the pathetic and flimsy reason for locking them down – it’s that people will comply.
With the Aussie police behaving like thugs, I don’t suppose people feel they have much option.
They’ll find eventually they have no choice but to fight fire with fire. We could be witnessing the beginnings of something comparable to Holodomor if the people don’t start to push back.
They do – they’re just cowards
The answer seems simple. The police and military come to their senses and realise that it’s not the people who are the enemy, it’s the politicians.
Until they realise there are vastly more people than police.
If Covid is detected in the “waste water”, presumably a euphemism for “sewage”, the place must be awash with it. That, or their, and/or their infrastructure is seriously buggered.
Or they enjoy drinking orange juice/Pepsi Max?
Covid is the disease. How does water catch a disease?
If they can’t even get the basic language right, how can they be trusted?
‘Have we lost our heads? The Government has metaphorically (for now – the idea has in fact been mooted) culled the cats, abandoning logic and taking the most counterintuitive course of action available to it at almost every turn. To begin with, it shelved its ready-made pandemic plan in preference for a never-before-tried-or-tested lockdown regime. Not once, in the history of pandemics – including bubonic plague – have we quarantined healthy people. But for this disease, with its roughly 99.7% survival rate, it was done without question. And the people nodded.”

Absolute batshit crazy. Think it’s about time the Aussies manned up and started to, literally, fight back.
Now, now: you’ll make them cry if you are nasty to the poor creatures.
This is totally insane
“Canberra, the capital of Australia, is being plunged into lockdown for a whole week following the reporting of a single positive Covid test. Retail and hospitality venues will be closed, again, and residents will not be able to leave their homes for ‘non-essential’ reasons past 5pm.”
This is pure insanity, or evil, most probably both. How much longer will Aussies put up with this nonsense? I thought they were supposed to be tough and independently minded… Can’t see Dennis Lillee or Jeff Thomson taking this lying down.
If this is enforced with sufficiently aggressive police patrols, there’s little ordinary people can do about it. Past totalitarian systems had to restrict themselves in such areas as they needed the money or even the production capabilities of a functioning economy.
But for as long as the system can be kept running by borrowing in exchange for promises to be fulfilled in the distant future, it’s perfectly possibly to run a country or a city like a huge prison camp. It’ll eventually collapse when creditors begin to realize that their money is being burnt without a chance of it ever being paid back, ie, when there’s no more money to pay the enforcers.
Whoever runs Australia by then will then find him- or herself in much the same situation as Nadschibullah found himself after Russians left him to his fate (and the same situation the current goverment of Afghanistan will soon find itself after the Americans left it on it’s own). The idea of a democratically elected leader of some country being lynched by an enraged, starving mob certainly has something going for it although I pity the people who will have to go through this.
Set Australia on fire. Not hard, I think.
I don’t suppose they’ve checked whether it’s a false positive.
Or where that one person caught it from. Wouldn’t it simply be easier to put him into quarantine rather than everyone else, or is that too sensible.
😂😂😂😂
Not only are these bozos not learning, they’re going backwards.
We’ve entered a period in history where sclerotic thought is now mainstream. Unfortunately I think that there will be an inevitable period of chaos after which either rationality prevails (probably at a very high cost) or modern civilisation ends.
Nutters
Wow, can you imagine reading all about this in a few years time? Honestly it’s beyond parody. I do think though that in the same way the MSM in the UK isn’t the true story, there is pushback in Australia, we just don’t hear about it…you know like hundreds of thousands marching through London.
“If you wanna get out of here… you talk to me.”
Why are the Aussies putting up with this? Not even in China (CCP) are doing this, bloody hell there’s no hope for us if Boris (Doris) tries this on in the UK!
I feel so sorry for the Aussies having to put up with this abject lunacy. But then again, perhaps it’s no surprise, I went to Australia in 2000 expecting the ‘land down under’ and the ‘one eyed trouser snake’ stuff. But no, I was struck by how highly regulated things were. Not at all like Crocodile Dundee land. Maybe they have to prove something to their ex-colonial ‘masters’. New Zealand seems even worse.
I understand that almost 50% of Australians are first or second generation immigrants, from all over the world. The Australians who fought in the world wars, and Vietnam, have, I think, dwindled away. They are now as weak and woke as the inhabitants of the UK, Europe and North America and Canada.
I had exactly the same experience when I visited. They seemed to be only to eager to comply with whatever rules were in place. I had a conversation with a bloke about voting and said that I don’t vote if I don’t like any of the options and he reacted as if I’d said I was going to sell my kids. It wasn’t so much that he thought I should have to vote, it’s that he really did believe that you had to vote to preserve freedom. I couldn’t get him to see the contradiction in his statement. This was almost 20 years ago and it seems from talking to relatives there that things just get ‘progressively’ worse as time goes by.
A lot of Aussies now come from ( or are first generation) countries with no record of democracy. They are used to being told what to do.
Sad, but not exactly unexpected.
Slowly but surely the truth is being exposed.

Maybe, just maybe, enough people will start to engage brains?
Any news of the cycle threshold (Ct) number used to attain the “positive test” result?
Come on Tobes.
Get off the fence.
This WEF playbook shit is manifestly evil and needs to be called out.
I worked for the federal government bureaucracy for three and a half decades in the Australian Capital Territory (I know, you get less for murder!) and you can’t get a more ‘liberal’, politically-attuned milieu than that, so it’s not surprising that Covid mania should have now struck the ACT over a single ‘case’ because that rogue PCR test would threaten the caring, if-it-saves-just-one-life Zero-Covid ‘public health’ hegemony.
For those keeping score at home, the ACT’s lockdown now makes it twenty state-based lockdowns since the Big One of 2020. Even Boris Johnson’s Britain is starting to look like Shangri-La compared to Australia now! I’d book an airflight to go to the Mother Country if it was possible to ever leave Australia – which it isn’t because ‘Closed Borders’ is part of the ‘Zero Covid’ package.
Sigh,

Stop electing lefties into government – especially lefty women, they’re always the worst. Look at the female thing wrecking NZ and sucking up to China. So glad we abandoned plans to emigrate there. Britain is bad enough, but at least I feel we’re finally beginning to get mad.
A hypothesis to challenge my conservative friends:
Australia’s batshit stupid response to covid is actually a reflection of it’s Murdoch-inspired tabloid media environment. Ditto with Britain’s only slightly-less irrational policies.
How else did a brave, rugged nation – the heroes of Anzac Cove and the Kokoda Track – fall into such a state as to lock the entire population of a major metropolis into house arrest because one sad cobber got a bit poorly?
The Covid nuttiness downunder has transcended the left-right divide. The rightwing Murdoch press has been pretty awful but it has been the only media stable to run more than token dissenters (Adam Creighton, the shining example amongst its journalists) whilst the the other more leftish-leaning commercial media outfit (Fairfax) has been solidly pro-lockdown and bat-poop crazy pro-Zero-Covid. The ‘progressive’/left-liberal Australian Broadcasting Commission (the antipodean equivalent of your BBC) has been utterly woeful, responsible for panicking the ‘progressive’ Aussie into mad hysteria. Propaganda works. It has been dismaying to watch the land of the larrikin descend into blind conformism and unthinking obedience to authority (although the massive Freedom Day rallies have unearthed a layer of people who haven’t switched their brains off and can see through the nonsense). Your question of why the Australia of the Covid era is unrecognisable from the Australia of myth and legend is a good one and sociologists should be scratching their heads over it. Perhaps the decline of blue-collar trade unionism, the (woke) quiesence of the universities, the unprecedented decades-long good run of rude economic health (we were the only developed Western country to dodge the worst of the GFC because we were still able… Read more »
Australia and New Zealand are clearly led by zero covid nut jobs but we came very close to adopting a similar approach in the UK. As evidence grows of antipodean Covid strategy failures, the more the news about it will be buried by the MSM.
What if it is a false positive?
There is no official word down here on whether it is a false positive (or, in the preferred new jargon – a ‘weak positive’, referring to a long-ago infection). No word on the Cycle Threshold that makes false positives so prevalent if set too high. Absolutely no word on whether the ‘case’ had any symptoms or was unwell in any way at all. If this ‘case’ was like so many other ‘cases’ i.e. a healthy person, then the entire rationale for the snap lockdown and, indeed, the world’s utterly mad, overwrought response to an unexceptional virus, would come crashing down, taking the political and ‘public health’ authors of the mad shutdown of society with it.

They couldn’t isolate him because he had no symptoms. So they locked everyone else up instead. I’d say “you couldn’t make it up” but obviously you can, and worse, people believe it.
Thank you, Mr Curzon, for reporting it as “a single positive Covid test”, rather than using the completely inaccurate propaganda word “case”.
I’d go further, and say that it’s a claimed single positive result for a non-specific, over-sensitive test for some fragment of SARS-COV-2.
When will the Australian govt finally understand that they CANNOT eradicate this (SARS) virus. It has an ANIMAL reservoir, so is just not possible to do so. They are making complete (s)arses of themselves.
Why are the people accepting this, and not rising up peacefully in protest, simply by continuing to go out maskless, when they want to, including after 5pm, such that the enforcement arm (police) simply cannot enforce it.
“BuT WhAT aBoUt AuSTrAliA?” The typical dipshit retort over the last 18 months by fanatics when presented with evidence that lockdowns are total BS. Because they ‘did a proper lockdown’. Yeah I guess they did and the place is becoming a human zoo.
Looks like Australia’s IQ has declined since the days when it was just a penal colony. 🙂
