U.K. Pubs’ Turnover 20% Down on Pre-Lockdown Levels Due to Continuing Government Restrictions
The reopening of pubs indoors last month has been hampered by the continuation of Government restrictions on the hospitality sector, particularly social distancing, which has resulted in a 20% slump in trade compared with pre-lockdown levels. This fall has come in spite of the reopening of between 90-95% of pubs since May 17th, although the cost of a pint has increased in many pubs. The Guardian has the story.
Pub owners have warned that despite welcoming customers back indoors from May 17th, and a boom in table bookings for restaurants and bars, turnover in the first week of reopening was 20% lower than in the same week in 2019 because of Government restrictions and physical distancing measures.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), which carried out the survey of publicans representing 7,000 pubs across the country, said the Government’s rules to limit the spread of the coronavirus had continued to make the businesses “unviable”.
Drinks sales initially soared to almost double the pre-pandemic when pubs first opened for business again in April outdoors, according to industry data, but the pub industry has blamed physical distancing measures for the punters’ muted response to the reopening of indoor spaces.
Under the Government’s current rules, pubs are limited to providing table service to limited group sizes of up to six people and cannot allow punters to drink at the bar or standing. They are also required to keep people at least one metre apart and ensure face masks are worn at all times, except when outdoors or seated inside.
The BBPA has warned that unless restrictions are removed in line with the Government’s June 21st timeline, the average pub would need to sell more than 24,672 extra pints over a year to make up for their loss in turnover.
The pub association’s survey revealed that across the week of May 17th turnover was at 80% of the same period in 2019 despite 95% of U.K. pubs, or about 45,000 venues, reopening to trade. The association estimates that if trade continues to stay at 80% of normal, the average pub would lose £94,000 in turnover over a year.
Emma McClarkin, the Chief Executive of the BBPA, warned that turnover may even fall further if the early enthusiasm to return to the local pub begins to wane because of the coronavirus restrictions.
It is a big blow to the industry, therefore, that the Government is considering keeping social distancing guidelines in place after the June 21st “Freedom Day”.

The pubs have been fucked over by the dictatorship. Who knew?
Obviously the bribes weren’t big enough
Come on folks weigh in to Tory Party donations if you want to do business in the UK
Wonder what Tim Martin of “Spoons” thinks.
No need to wonder, he uses his quarterly magazine to express his views.

He needs to defy the Government along with the rest of the industry. Just say No! I managed to March in London with thousands of like-minded people, there were definitely more than thirty meeting outside, and we didn’t ask the Governments permission! Organise all the breweries and pub owners and tell the tyrants you are not following any more nonsense guidance. Or quietly drop masks, distancing etc, your choice. See what happens…
Problem is that ulitmately a publican could lose his licence.
Believe me I know it wouldn’t be easy, but my point is if they all did it, would they all lose their licence? Would they blog up the courts?Good, would it take years for all the counter claims? Good. The thousands of restaurants and cafes that opened in Italy didn’t ask permission, people rallied to their cause, and it sent a powerful message.
They’re going to lose their business anyway if they don’t get up and do something.
This way they are going to keep their license but lose their business.
Why ? Take the HSE risk assessment. Assess the risk and impose no restrictions. Easy. Let them take you to court to say why your Risk Assessment is reckless and then produce the evidence. There is none. Will be none and can be none. The industry caused themselves extreme harm and as much as I don’t want them to fail, if you are daft enough to enter into the enemy’s game then you risk losing. Believe me – the HSE risk assessment is nonsense and that’s a wide open goal. From Law or Fiction “ Guidance is generally unenforceable but, as a matter of legal obligation, employers and controllers of premises are required to undertake evidence-based health and safety risk assessments. If there is no evidence of a significant danger, no mitigation is required”. Stop trashing your own business.
As last comment.
Thanks for that, court.
I’d love to hear his views candidly though.
His articles are obviously very well crafted to criticise the government, without saying the antisocial pub policies are a load of tosh.
I guess local council licence inspectors could really make his/his pub managers lives a misery if he shouted too loud – I think that’s a real shame, someone with his clout could really help change the narrative.
Agreed.
Stop calling it freedom day
20% down seems low to me. Where I live there are plenty of pubs that rely on being rammed all night on a Friday and Saturday
I agree it’s almost certainly low, I suspect a lot of places did get a temporary boost – people had been away from pubs & places for so long, that many were just desperate to go “somewhere” for a drink. the bit in the article about “if trade stays at 80% of normal…” no way it stays anywhere near 80% for long if the lunacy continues, & people are confronted with bits of hanging plastic indoors & all the rest of it.
I don’t know why they’re bothering. They’ll be the first to be shut again even if they follow every ridiculous rule to the letter and not a single case can be traced back to them.
Might as well say fuck it on the 21st and open as normal whatever the govt says. That’d be the best possible way forward.
this …
Why the 21st June? Why not now? Or is it because Johnson and pals tell you it’s the 21st? Yes, better do as they say… or there might be reprisals from the Police and Covid Marshalls, assisted by the snitching neighbours. Fines and whatnot.
To be honest when I have been in my local nobody has bothered with the rules, I’ve sat with various (large) groups in one night, wandered around maskless etc. However, I am in the north and we’re more sensible up here. June 21st needs to see a grand unmasking from everyone.
Many of the pubs haven’t helped themselves by going along so enthusiastically for the restrictions.
Agree. As above “ Guidance is generally unenforceable but, as a matter of legal obligation, employers and controllers of premises are required to undertake evidence-based health and safety risk assessments. If there is no evidence of a significant danger, no mitigation is required”.
Dead right. Pubs the last place for pettiness, B.S. etc but they seem to enjoy doling it out.
Just this evening my OH found this in 2 local bars/pubs. He was out for drinks with a friend. First place they went closed at 6pm, the next one refused to take orders except through an app, refused to allow customers inside the building and closed at 7pm. Idiots. They both deserve to go bankrupt.
pubs very quiet this weekend-some with just one or two customers-quieter than the outside only rule
For something that isn’t even alive, this virus is incredibly intelligent to know the difference between a seated and standing punter.
It apparently often attacks at specific times of day too, which means the stupid humans think they can outsmart it using curfews.
I think we might as well surrender, as it’s far more intelligent than our politicians.
At the pub we visited last week the crazy masks on/masks off rule was like a Brian Rix farce. Totally daft yet so many customers complying. Apart from the two rebels of course…..😉
Businesses stop obeying silly rules and this is over .Simple. Real world though they all bend over and let Johnson and his regime stick it up their wrong ‘un.
Freedom Day ffs. The freedom the masses long for is something that is ours anyway for crying out loud. The only power Government has is what we allow it to have.
Is the drop in trade really due to (anti)social distancing, or are a lot of people still too scared to go out after 15 months of project fear. If the latter is the real reason are the government going to admit their propaganda has gone too far and spend their 100’s of millions in advertising on trying to reassure people that it’s safe to resume normal life. Sadly judging by all the talk of scariants, travel restrictions, pointless jabs for kids etc. the answer at the minute seems to be a resounding no.
A pub nearby is currently charging £9.50 for a pint of Peroni according to a friend who works for them.Needless to say we don’t go to this pub.
I was a regular pub boozer. Not now. I’m not wearing, no pun, there B.S.
