The Businesses That Won’t Be Reopening on May 17th

The media, not wanting to bite the hand that feeds it, has mainly focused on what will reopen – and who we will be “allowed” to cuddle – when the next stage of the Government’s “roadmap” out of lockdown is reached on May 17th. Very little has been written about the businesses that won’t be able to open on this date – but the Sun has today reported on the companies that will have to continue to wait (if they can afford to do so).

While many businesses are set to reopen next Monday, some will have to wait until June 21st at the earliest to reopen…

If you want to go clubbing, you won’t be able to do so until another six weeks time – if the Prime Minister’s roadmap out of lockdown goes according to plan.

This is due to the difficulty of making them Covid-secure due to limited social distancing and it’s harder to keep areas clean constantly.

Gigs are supposed to restart from June 21st, but they could be allowed to go-ahead with limits on numbers and social distancing from next Monday.

Weddings should be allowed without restrictions on numbers in the final stage of the roadmap – but the Prime Minister is under pressure to relax rules sooner than this.

All restrictions will be lifted from June 21st as long as the pace of the vaccine rollout continues the way it is, and infection rates stay down.

Not quite “all” restrictions will end at this point, however. Reports suggest that rules on mask-wearing will stay in place past the “end” of lockdown. Caps on audience numbers at large events are also being discussed, as are staggered entry and exit times which will mean lots of queuing (thereby increasing the chances of viral transmission).

Indoor events such as gigs will have a capacity limit of 1,000, or 50% [from May 17th] – whichever is the smaller number.

Meanwhile, outdoor events will be able to welcome up 4,000 or 50% capacity.

But outdoor events which are seated, such as football matches, will be capped at 10,000 or 25%.

The Government is said to have already told football’s UEFA that crowd sizes at upcoming events – including ones that will take place after June 21st – will be limited to 45,000. And, of course, tens of thousands of businesses will never reopen due to the damage done to them by a year of lockdowns.

The Sun report is worth reading in full.

Masks, distancing, track and trace, mandatory tests, travel restrictions, caps on numbers = lockdown

The 21st June will make no difference to my life. I do more or less exactly the same things now as I have done since lockdown started in March 2020, the only difference being the tennis club is open. Other than that, I don’t go anywhere or do anything that involves coronabollocks – which is more or less everything other than outdoor activity. I have continued to socialise privately, sometimes legally, sometimes illegally. But for the rest, life is over and will continue to be so, probably for decades.

I’ve been AWOL from 2 funerals and could miss a wedding in September if the muzzles stay.

I wish your last sentence was pessimistic, but I am afraid that I concur. The only question is whether the “masters” want to return us all to serfdom (using minimal resources), or whether they demand a cull. How tolerant will they be of people like us who stubbornly continue to live our lives?

I won’t be celebrating because there is very little to celebrate. For people who own or work in affected businesses that do reopen, I will be glad for them that they can try to earn a living again, and I will be glad for people who need to travel to see loved ones abroad.

Let’s keep real.

Currently, there is no ‘Corona’ virus – in the sense of a widespread danger of infection. It has merged into the background, and will probably emerge again with all the other agents as infections rise – as always – in the autumn.

However, having established what they can get away with in terms of a departure from considered strategy, the government is not going to let go of all levers of control.

We had suspected this last year, but the confected ’emergency’ has now been extended so that there can be no doubt that political control is the issue, not a virus.

  1. Genuine fear of covid/concern for public health
  2. Love of power for its own sake
  3. Great reset/climate change/other agendas
  4. Arse-covering – they have dug a very deep hole for themselves
  5. Political gain – they think it’s what people expect
  6. They are stuck in a groove and it hasn’t occurred to them to stop it all
  7. Financial gain – fat contracts for your mates

Out of the above unholy, toxic cocktail of ingredients, (1) is probably the smallest %, tending towards zero. Of the others, it’s anyone’s guess what the proportions are and they will vary from country to country.

I work in hospitality and have staffed a lot of weddings.
I am looking for employment, and seen a few adverts in this sector, expecting to be exceptionally busy, which people catching up.
I would not want my day spoilt by staff wearing masks, which I expect a lot of businesses will keep going if the govt says it is not necessary. I do hope bride and grooms will ask their venue to get rid of masks.
